Whew... @papereader indirectly introduced me to Hamilton via her consistent enthusiasm for the show. Â When I got it into my head to listen to the sdtk this morning I thought I would get a few good pieces for running- some heavy hitting stuff.
I didnât expect to lose myself in this recounting, to have to stop what I was doing for crying four times over the story.
If you havenât listened yet. Â Do it. Â Preferably when you can give it your undivided attention.

Papereader asked:Â
Itâs so difficult to decide these things, but Scotch (Middlegame) commentary of Mycroft and Lestrade during or after they go to the Philharmonic?
***
I answer:Â
So. The thing about the Philharmonic. Mycroft and Lestrade spend most of Middlegame apart, and it occurred to me as I was writing it that, despite the fact that he had moved into Mycroft's house, Mycroft's *life* still remained largely closed to Lestrade. Mycroft knew a lot about Lestrade's life, sometimes interacted with Lestrade's colleagues, kept close tabs on him, but Lestrade knew nothing about a lot of Mycroft. Not just his work but his *play.* For instance, the dates referenced are all Lestrade's ideas: movies he's chosen, pubs he's dragged Mycroft to, etc.Â
It occurred to me that it seemed like Mycroft was purposely trying to mold himself to fit Lestrade as well as he could, to not force Lestrade to do things he didn't think he would like. Not because he was insecure, but because Mycroft doesn't bend for people, and he thought it would be a sign of his devotion that he would bend so much for Lestrade. So I wanted there to be some piece of his life that Lestrade insisted on being part of. It wouldn't be Mycroft's work--Lestrade would respect that--so I settled on the Philharmonic.Â
Lestrade going with Mycroft to the Philhamonic was a very public proclamation for Mycroft of his relationship with Lestrade. I don't think he'd ever taken anyone before. I think he had two tickets, thinking he *might* eventually take someone, maybe, but he'd never actually thought he would. So to have Lestrade there with him was wildly intimate, astonishingly momentous. It really drove home to Mycroft how *serious* he was about Lestrade. Not that he didn't think he was before, but suddenly it seemed to him like Lestrade just *had* to move in with him, officially, all out in the open. Just had to.Â
The Bang and the Clatter is my favorite favorite, and one of the parts I love to bits is where they're lying on the grass watching the Home Run Derby and Sherlock is just so *happy* even while John drops grass on his face. It would be lovely to see Sherlock's perspective on this. I guess this can be either a question to Sherlock or a DVD-style narrative. :)
That scene is a particular favorite of mine, too. Iâve always loved the Home Run Derby because Iâve always loved how the players kind of just hang out with each other. Baseball players being friends with each other is a weakness of mine. So, given the opportunity to write something where the two baseball players hanging out were more than friends, I couldnât resist it. And John was *so* *happy,* because heâd gotten everything he ever wanted, professionally and personally. And Sherlock was so happy, too. And it felt natural to me that they would be at this very public event but they would feel like it was only the two of them. The entirety of that season was really all about Sherlock and John feeling like they were the only people on the planet. They were just completely wrapped up in  each other. *Each other* was all they needed.Â
If you were to ask Sherlock about his perspective that night, he would tell you that he was happy because he could tell that John was incandescently happy. The throwing-grass thing was silly and foolish but John was doing it because he was *happy,* and Sherlock finds anything a happy John does to be endearing and wonderful. And Sherlock was also amazed that there was someone there who was not only willingly talking to him but felt comfortable enough with him to throw grass at him. Sherlock would never have imagined that someone throwing grass at him was something heâd been craving but John gave him the ability to be the sort of person other people could be silly with, which was something heâd never had before and wasnât even realizing he was missing. Sherlock through Johnâs eyes is an astonishing thing, and he realizes how much that night, when John starts flinging grass at him like thatâs something you should be doing with Sherlock Holmes. Itâs why Sherlock starts fighting so passionately at that point to keep John forever. Because he loves John, and also because he wants forever to be that person John sees, who can be teased and have grass thrown at him.Â
papereader replied to your post âNo Shameâ
The grin on my face, I can't even. Of COURSE Sherlock would empathise with the dragon, but then isn't that the beauty of it? :)
Yup! :-)
