Scott remembered vividly the moment he was introduced to his knight, the eldest Hale son sworn to him as his personal knight. It was a gesture of good will; a tradition from the Hale family to show support of a King or Queen. They’d supported Queen Melissa when she’d stepped in the position in lieu of her ailing husband. When he passed, everyone knew Scott would take on the role, but he’d been just past the date of his fourteenth birthday when he went to meet the Hales, went to meet Derek for the first time. They’d exchanged letters, brief ones on a handful of times over the years, and Scott found himself jittery with nerves. So much so that Stiles had commented on Scott’s unusual unsteady energy.
He was nervous, Derek was now eighteen, and would be arriving to the palace to take up his place as Scott’s knight. He stood beside his mother, fingers tapping lightly against the scabbard of his sword, the crown set atop his curls felt heavier than the thick cloak that hung over his shoulders, and Scott swallowed hard, looking over at Ser Noah, Stiles’ father and subsequently the captain of the guard - who’d be responsible for guiding Derek when he joined.
The sound of horses, the carriage wheels on stone made Scott stand up a little straighter, looking at his mother; briefly, who stood strong beside him, a hand on his shoulder lightly. Scott exhaled slowly and turned his gaze properly to the gate, at the far end of the courtyard that stretched before Scott.
