Smurf Village exploited this knowledge by presenting young players with purchases within this window. Some parents were caught unawares when they received credit card charges for Smurfberries.

Free To Play is often an ongoing transaction that involves the player/the child and children aren’t properly equipped to make cost/value decisions. It’s a bad business model that results in outraged customers (parents) and indignant partners (Apple). Recently, the FTC has forced Apple and Amazon to pay settlements to people who’ve been charged with unauthorized in-app purchases.

It is important for game developers to implement a revenue model that’s sensitive to the needs of young users and their parents. We believe parents need to control the purchasing decision and the paid model is the best option.

Unfortunately, parents have a bias towards the free apps that have saturated the market over the past few years.
