Here are some slides from my quick presentation this past Saturday for Pagdiriwang organized by the Seattle kapwa. I typically start off with a bit of storytelling about how I grew up to give the audience some context of my position of certain topics. In these slides, I talk about how the "Golden Age" of Hip Hop lead me to learning about revolutionaries like Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Black Panthers, and Bob Marley. It caused me to ask questions about my own culture and my privilege. As I started to ask more questions and peeling back the layers, I learned about how I was a product of Spanish and American colonialism. I left no stone unturned back then. I was an angry MF with religion, languages, and the education system. Anti-blackness has been in our consciousness for hundreds and hundreds of years due to colonialism and colorism. This mentality is still with us today in the Philippines and the diaspora. Look how we treat out black Filipinos and bleach our skin for the illusion of a better life. This mentality isn't only detrimental to just culture bearers but to everyday non "woke" folks. It can affect your cultural, social, and economic value.
