Although Andrew was still not back on the field just yet, he was back on his usual twenty-four hour shifts. He had instead been given the task of working with a set of new trainees who had just finished the academy and were being introduced to the field. He had a feeling, that although he had been cleared by a doctor to go back into the field and was physically back to where he was prior to his injuries, he was being punished due to not following orders that day. A way to bestow upon him a certain responsibility without actually granting him a position of power, but still making him an authority figure to those who were just starting.
“How’s the babysitting going?” asked Sean as he came over and patted Andrew forcefully on the back.
“Hey,” he grunted as he looked over at glared at him. He knew Sean was well aware of how much he hated having to work with any kind of new trainees. They always felt so stupid. “It’s going fine, how’s whatever-your-boring-job entails going?”
“Great. Did you see? There’s a fire,” said Sean as he then gestured to the small TV that was often on and in the background should any of them want to watch something.
“No,” said Andrew as he glanced at the TV. “Clearly not us.”
“No, but did you see where?” pressed Sean. “It’s in central Brooklyn.” It was just outside the area they dealt with.
Andrew looked back at the TV. They were showing the building and he paused, realizing it looked very familiar. “Hey, that’s just south of Prospect Park, isn’t it?” he frowned.
“I think so,” nodded Sean.
“Shit,” he said as he jumped up. “Shit, shit, shit. We need to go.”
“We can’t,” said Sean. “That’s not our--”
“We need to go,” repeated Andrew as he left to get his things.
“It’s not that big a fire, though,” said Sean. “They don’t need us.”
“I don’t give a fuck, I’m going to fucking go,” said Andrew who had his backpack on. “I’m going as a civilian. Are you going to fucking come with me. Otherwise, you can cover for me.”
Sean stared for a moment, clearly frozen on the best decision to make, but he also knew exactly why Andrew freaking out and getting so aggressive. After several seconds, he caved, however. “Fine, fine. I’m going, but only so this way you don’t get in trouble,” he grunted as he walked off to grab his own things before joining Andrew.
“Great, I’ve got an Uber out front,” he said as he hurried outside, Sean following him. They both got into the Uber, while Andrew was on his phone, calling Ava. “Pick up, pick up, pick up,” he muttered as the phone rang and rang... “Can’t you drive any fucking faster?” @avaxhawthorne
