hotch  glanced  up,  but  only  for  a  moment  as  he  heard  morgan’s  voice,  as  if double  checking  that  it  was  just  who  he  was  expecting.  it  was  ––  it  rarely wasn’t.  most  of  the  members  of  the  team  didn’t  like  to  be  in  attendance  to  his  office  if  they  could  help  it;  he’d  long  since  learned  not  to  take  it personally.  ❝  it’s  nothing  to  be  worried  about.  ❞  though  in  comparison  to  the  other  members  of  the  unit,  he  doubted  that worry  had  been  morgan’s  first  instinct  upon  being  summoned  to  his  office.  ❝  i’m  taking  a  leave  of  absence.  a  week,  maybe two.  ❞  mandated,  but  that  part  was  left  in  the  silence  between  his  words.  ❝  i’m  recommending  you  step  in  as interim  chief,  and  i  wanted  you  to  hear  it  from  me  first.  ❞

it  was  only  as  she  pulled  back,  that  a  more stern  expression  filled  her  features,  ❝  you  should  have  at  least called  me  on  your  way  back  here  to  stop  me worrying.  ❞  but  she’d  forgive  him  within  a  couple  of  minutes,  she  always did.

weary  eyes  looked  up  from  the  papers  strewn  across  the  desk,  lit  only  by  the  amber  glow  coming  from  a  bulb  that  threatened  to  blow  with  every  passing  moment  that  it  continued  to  shine.  ❝  about  as  long  as  it's  been  since  you've  last  slept.  ❞  tired  chuckle  followed  her  words,  hands  pushing  her  blonde  locks  out  of  her  face  as  she  finally  relaxed  back  into  the  chair.  a  moment  of  reprise,  a  small  break,  before  they'd  undoubtably  have  to  get  back  to  the  task  at  hand.  ❝  i  don't  know  how  you  do  it,  sometimes.  ❞  spoken  with  an  admiration  for  her  fellow,  more  experienced  agent.  ❝  do  you  have  a  better  coffee  blend  than  i  do  ?  ❞  a  joke  she  hoped  might  cut  through  the  darkness  of  the  office  they'd  commandeered  since  they'd  arrived.
