P-47D Razorback 'Bonnie'
1/48 scale Testors, decals by Microscale.
Originally I intended this to be a Red tails P-47D, but the decals broke up in the water. So I ordered a decal set from eBay.
P-47D 'Bonnie' was flown by Major Bill Dunham of the 460th Fighter Squadron of the 348th fighter group based at Tacloban, Philippines, 1945.
56th FG was mostly involved in low level close air support, and camouflage on the upper surfaces made the bomb-laden P-47s less likely to bounced from above by Luftwaffe fighters. Any combination of darker colours seems to have been preferred to bare metal.

85 years ago today was the first flight of the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt.

56th did fly bare metal P-47s, presumably due to the availability or not of camo paint, or the manitenance downtime needed to apply it, but given the opportunity most were repainted with a camo scheme at one point or another in the run up to, or after, D-Day.
