4 August 1942. On a test flight the prototype XP-47B Thunderbolt 40-3051 left its tail wheel down and the turbocharger’s exhaust ignited the tyre, spreading to the fabric-covered control surfaces. Pilot Filmore L. Gilmer bailed out. The Thunderbolt crashed into Long Island Sound.

On July 20, 1944, Francis S. Gabreski, the most successful American fighter pilot in Europe, undertook his last combat mission. During an attack on the airfield near Bassenheim, he caught the propeller of his P-47 on the ground, made an emergency landing, and after a few days fell into captivity.
