Promoters of a solid, realistic initiative to create a north-south regional passenger rail line through Central Michigan are seeking public input.
North + South Passenger Rail Project would run between Detroit and Cadillac, MI, and then branch to either Traverse City or Petoskey. It would use an almost entirely state-owned rail corridor that already exists, at a top speed of 110 mph.
It’s approximately 260 miles from Detroit to Traverse City, and 310 miles to Petoskey, so it’s a 4 ½- to five-hour trip, faster if it’s done right.
Proposed stops in addition to those mentioned above include Kalkaska, Clare, Mount Pleasant, Alma, Owosso, Durand, Howell, and Ann Arbor.
If you live in, work in or visit Michigan, or would do so if there was a North + South Passenger Rail train, please take the survey, and vote for what’s important to you.
"golden beam of light"
If this was ever a case for follow your instinct and stay with the train - leaving Owosso the sky was socked in for the Pere Marquette 1225 Polar Express chase. However north of Henderson the sky showed signs of a breakthrough with the sun - well just before sunset a golden beam of light hit the rails and the 1225 making the gamble worth it - November 23, 2007.
"annie first encounter"
Having completed their work at the GTW Durand, Michigan yard this trio of Ann Arbor GP35's on train TF-5 is on the home stretch for the crew for the terminal in Owosso. The sun has set however this my first Annie encounter did not stop me from dropping the shutter settings on the Argus C3 filled with Kodachrome II and tried a pan under pink hued clouds while standing beside the GTW mainline to Grand Rapids way back on September 29, 1974.

“I appreciate the Supreme Court stepping in and recognizing that I do not lose constitutional protections just because of speculation and innuendo. I am not a health threat to anyone, and I have a right to continue to cut hair and earn a living,” Manke said in a statement, according to WNEM. “The Courts have consistently upheld my constitutional rights affirming that the Governor’s attempts to shut me down were out of line.”
Attorney David Kallman, who is representing Manke against the state, added, “I am pleased that our Supreme Court upheld our constitutional rights, and that cooler heads have prevailed. Our clients are not a threat to the public’s health, safety, and welfare. This is a great day for upholding the rule of law and restoring good governance. I trust Governor Whitmer will comply with the Court’s ruling now.”
