Bessie’s felt the bone-deep ache in her ribs ever since she’s been reincarnated. It was always present, she just didn’t feel it all the time. Sometimes it was a mere tingle in the marrow of her bones, or other times it was a full on beating against the cage.
Either way, she dealt with it. That’s just how she was. She didn’t need anymore attention drawn to her- that was already a problem with the crew. She especially didn’t need attention on her during a show, yet she was starting to fear that would happen if she didn’t stop coughing.
It was during one of the speaking parts, thank god. It started as an itch in the pit of Bessie’s diaphragm, but it spread up to her chest and neck like thousands of fire ants crawling up the inside of her body. She could feel their little legs scurry across her fleshy interior, then, upon finding a good spot, dug their little mandibles into her, tunneling and biting until she couldn’t take it anymore.
Bessie coughed once, twice, three times, four times, five times, six times-
Raw, heaving coughs that made her eyes water broke free from her lips. Her lungs quickly started to scream for air as they are bombarded by a swarm of fire ants that fill up each and every airway she has. Quick breaths of oxygen from her nose don’t help- inhaling yanks a long tangle of barbed wire right out of her throat and exhaling jams it directly back in. The coughing carved deep, blazing trenches in her chest cavity, which quickly become more homes for the infestation marching within her.
It’s too much. It hurts so bad. The audience is definitely staring because she’s being so damn loud. The queens are trying their best to deliver their lines, but the hacking noises their bassist is making are getting distracting.
Once again, Bessie coughs, but this comes out wet. The force causes her to double over, her bass dangling heavily off of her torso, and she makes a horrible, painful-sounding gurgle and then a watery gag. After making a noise that was very reminiscent of a cat choking up a hairball, the fire ants seize their gnawing. She straightens up, waving a hand in apology, and the queens return to full focus.
However, Bessie doesn’t miss the roil in her stomach or the rawness in her throat. She coughed again, but nobody heard. When she looks down, she sees red coating her hand. A fresh droplet splatters down onto her palm from where thick, sticky strings of blood are drooling from her mouth.
