Everyone is starting uni now here, so here’s a few tips:
- join a group or society - women’s department, humanitarian group, the society that correlates to your major - whatever, pick one and go, you’ll make -like-minded friends who you probably wouldn’t get to meet
- take your assignments to your professors / tutors - they want to help you, they will read over your work or direct you to the academic skills on campus if they can’t read your work for regulatory reasons. This is something you’re paying for don’t feel intimated.
-drink water - self-explanatory but your brain and liver (especially in O-week) will thank you
-find a study space that works for you - somewhere on campus I think is best, you will spend a lot of time on campus and if you have a quiet space that you can study in you will feel so much better when you have an hour in between classes to kill. It’s like a little bit of familiarity on campus.
- don’t go on a bender, look after your mental health - not to scare people but first year can be hard, heck uni can be hard, don’t ignore your mental health, don’t go on a bender, go to the counselling services on campus, drop a subject, get an extension. People will be accommodating but you need to seek help.
- stay motivated and organised - it’s easy to be motivated at the start of the year, keep up that motivation and keep doing your readings and going to class
