Freddie remembers. Looking back on it now, it’s funny. He owes his sister so much because without Hazel –
Eileen stirs in her sleep, eyebrows creasing and lips parting with a soft ‘smack’ as she readjusts herself next to him. It brings a smile to his face and she relaxes against his shoulder once more.
Eileen remembers too.
----
Eileen swears that, for a moment, her heart stopped beating and that no encounter in her life had been quite as terrifying as this. Why this woman with her half-shaven head and intimidating presence would decide to strike up a conversation with her outside of a bookstore on the sidewalk in the middle of downtown was beyond her.
The only conceivable reason that Eileen could manage to come up with involved her own possible mugging or that this woman, whoever she was, was looking to sell illegal substances. Though surely an alleyway would have been a more appropriate location.
“That’s some gorgeous jewelry you got there.” Eileen forces a smile as her hands clutch her newly bought book, fearing that perhaps her assumptions may have been right. She was likely going to be subjected to attempts at an illegal exchange.
“Y-yes, thank you.” She hopes she manages to sound normal as she continues: “my father bought it for my birthday last year.”
“Do you mind-“ Eileen swallows nervously. “-telling me where he got it? If you know, I mean. It looks so cute. I would love some of my own! I have this jacket that it’d go positively perfect with!”
The woman squeaks in delight and Eileen is taken aback by the turn of the conversation. “My head is reeling with so many new outfit ideas now because you know jewelry can make or break anything. Shoes too. Shoes have the same affect. And ah – I’m getting way ahead of myself! I haven’t even introduced myself yet and here I am rambling on and on. And about things you probably don’t even care about.”
She apologizes and Eileen’s surprise only seems to grow excessively.
"I’m Hazel.”
“…Eileen.”
Eileen doesn’t know how it happened, but this woman, Hazel, had somehow managed to convince her to tag along to hang out with her and her friends after the end of their conversation.
I think it was the laugh. Eileen had always had a weakness for laughter and something about Hazel’s was captivating, inviting and although part of her was still holding on to her prejudices in fear, she had to admit that she had been in the wrong and should have been more open to the idea this woman had meant no harm when she had approached her.
But that didn’t stop her from assuming the same when she met her brother.
“This is Freddie,” Hazel acknowledges the tallest person in the group with a clap on the shoulder. “Don’t mind him much. He’s just the lame older brother, you know?”
For the second time that day, Eileen forces a smile. “H-hello…” she barely utters her small greeting and she thinks she might be shaking in fear.
This man; not only is he tall but like his sister he’s covered in tattoos and completely clad in leather and denim. He looks like he could and would beat her up and that makes Eileen’s stomach drop and her brow sweat nervously. Perhaps it wasn’t a good idea to come here despite how charismatic and persuasive Hazel’s laugh had been.
“And, Freddie, this is Eileen. She’s a new friend of mine.” Eileen resists the urge to say they only met a matter of twenty minutes ago so how possibly could they be “friends” and, luckily, she succeeds.
Freddie nods and she sees him swallow and notices he suddenly looks a little red. “Nice to meet you.”
“Uh, l-likewise.”
Hazel smiles oddly at her brother before directing her attention back to Eileen. “Okay, moving on! Over here we also have Ashton and Quinn and next to them is my little baby bro, Mikey-poo.”
“I told you not to call me that!” Mike snaps and Hazel chuckles, rolling her eyes.
“It looks like the others aren’t here yet, but I’m sure you’ll meet them eventually,” she smiles, completely dismissing her brother’s complaint so Mike’s left to sulk angrily against the building. And that actually makes Eileen want to laugh, but she holds it in because these people really do come off frightening and the last thing she wants to do is piss them off.
Some time seems to pass and Eileen is too shy to speak unless spoken too so she busies herself with listening in on the discussions these scary-looking people are having with each other. Their topics of conversation seem normal and that puts her at ease somewhat.
“Hmmm, they’re really late, aren’t they?” She looks over to Hazel, who seems to be frowning. “What is with that?”
Freddie shrugs and is about to say something before his sister cuts him off. “I’m gonna go look for them, m’kay?” Hazel pushes herself off the wall and turns to Eileen with an apologetic look. “It’s getting a little late and I’d hate to make you wait until dark to see a bunch of idiots that can’t even show up on time. And I’m sure you’d like to head home?”
“Y-yeah, if you don’t mind…” In all honesty, Eileen hadn’t even realized the fact the sun was beginning to set, but heading home sounded like a swell idea.
“I’ll have Freddie take you home, okay?”
That idea… sounded not so swell.
“Freddie! I’ve got a job for you!”
----
Eileen stirs in her sleep again, and she crinkles her nose as her eyes begin to flutter open. She’s greeted with a peck on the forehead and she smiles because even half-asleep she knows those lips belong to Freddie.
