Q&A: How to learn the in's and out's of web design?
Question by Voldemort’s Nose: How to learn the in’s and out’s of web design? A friend came to me with the idea of starting a web design company, and he was so passionate that even I was riled up. However, now that the euphoria has worn off, I’ve started to become realistic. We both only have HTML and CSS knowledge (And we’re being taught Java in our IT class, but I’m guessing that’s not extremely applicable to web design). What are some books or websites that’ll teach the in’s and out’s of web design? I know of w3schools and Codecademy, and in regards to books I’ve heard about Head First Web Design. I’d like to learn everything I need to know, starting from basic HTML again, through CSS, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and topics like SEO etc…? All help is appreciated!

Answer by D You’re not going to learn that much from books, but I suggest reading Vincent Flanders books “Websites that Suck” and “Son of Websites that Suck”. They’re a few years old but still very applicable, and will help you understand what really makes a site good and bad from a business standpoint. The important thing is to always follow good practice and use correct code, and not worry about whether you have the latest bells and whistles. You’re going to find it’s very difficult to make a living selling websites, it’s a crowded market and customers are hard to find, and picky and demanding, as well as slow to pay, when you do get them.
