Untamed heirloom roses and hips. I’m not the kind of girl who should have fancy roses- structured and methodical. Instead, I’ll support the weight, cut off the dead or lacking, and wind it deeper and further into the fence. Raised beds are in the back with hearty lavender, dying back valerian, hay covered garlic tips, what’s left of the scraggly sage and rosemary. Oh , August. I had the windows open every night this week, listening to crickets and locusts and sometimes, rain. In that time, I put up a whole bushel of peaches- the freezer is stuffed, old jars filled with dried slices and jams are ready to go in our pantry. It seems that this season I’m always a touch behind. Yesterday was the birthday of my forever inspiration and instead of posting on social media, my husband and I whipped up many pounds of clove scented soap, the color of dried field corn and topped with actual flint corn kernels in blues and heavy turkey reds.
