I came across the trailer for this while scrolling on social media & I have to share!
This documentary shares the "story of a radical movement that sought to end heroin addiction in communities of color with acupuncture, led by Dr. Mutulu Shakur..."
Reminded me of why I do the work I do. Thank you to my guides who keep me grounded.

I didn’t understand all your decisions. But I always knew you wanted the best for me. Early lessons in “doing the best you can” left questions and sometimes hostility, but overall gratitude.
I applaud you for always doing your best. It’s offered me memories of fun, memories of responsibility, memories of what it means to be a Black Woman in the land of the ugly. Strength, Magic, Softness, Beauty, Confusion, Composure.
I still can’t make sense of it all. But I always know I’m grateful for the life you chose to keep and nurture. For the seemingly senseless rules and restrictions. For the truth you lived in and out. For the best you had to give. For the inspiration. For the sacrifices.
The more I talk to my parents
the more I realize some of the things I’m grappling with are not my own.Â
Are the children well?
I once heard in a story that you can tell the health of a community by the health of its children. I don’t remember the details of the story, but I certainly remember the line where the person asks, “Are the children well?” This line has stuck with me for years and continues to anchor me in the work I do as an educator.Â
Yesterday, I went to the funeral of a young man I used to teach. It was the first time I had been to a funeral of a student. Unfortunately, it was not the first time hearing of a Black child losing their life too soon.Â
So when I come back to this question of whether the children are well, the answer saddens me. I fear the realities our youth are subjected to. I fear the indoctrination they receive in these mega schools. I fear for the physical, mental, and spiritual health of our babies.Â
I can’t wait until Monday so I can tell the rest of my babies that I love and believe in them. I can’t wait to check in and see how their weekends were. I can’t wait to go to the football game with them. I can’t wait to be in their presence so I know that they are ok. Even if it is only for the short while that they are in my care. I do the best that I can to make sure they are taken care of while I can. I also try my hardest to make sure they have the access, knowledge and tools to create the lives they want for themselves when they leave my care.Â

Keep in mind I’m a teacher
& I’m sensitive about my students.Â
Black People been rich.
That’s why they created money. That’s why they erased your history from memory. That’s why they denounce your traditions.Â
But that’s also why they commodify your culture. That’s why they miseducate you. That’s why they fear our unity.Â
