Let’s take a moment to talk about this candle. 

An argument could be made that Regina scowls at it in the way that she does because the jester is irritating her, but perhaps there’s more to it than this. 

“Make a wish.” 

Regina grew up in a land where magic is real and wishes come true. She likely grew up making two dozen birthday wishes, wishing upon a hundred stars, desperately pleading for mother to be gentle, for daddy to be strong, for Daniel to come back to her, for the king to leave her alone. None of these wishes were ever granted. Years have passed and wishing has proved to be an utterly fruitless endeavor. Stupid girl. But yet year after year a cake is laid out before her, a flickering candle on top, a twitching reminder of wishes unheard.
