A sharp-eyed reader might notice that when I illustrated THE FLYING MAN every time Otto Lilienthal created a new glider design I introduced it to the reader in the same way. Same pose, same composition same emotional keyword for that page of illustration.

Pacing a picture book is always an interesting and fun storytelling challenge. The first text of THE FLYING MAN doesn’t appear until pg 4, but I wanted to start the visual narrative right on the title page.
Otto’s adolescent efforts at flying are interesting, but I loved the clandestine aspect. So I took the first wordless pages to show the brothers making their silent, nighttime way from their parent’s apartment in the town of Anklam —>Â
To the fields outside of town —>Â
And finally up the hill where the images and text finally link up.
