On 27 July, 1981, Adam was abducted from a Sears department store in the Hollywood Mall in Hollywood, Florida. His decapitated head was discovered in a ditch two weeks later by a fisherman over 100 miles away. Authorities searched for leads, and at one point in the investigation, they even suspected that his own father, John Walsh, who would later go on to become the host of America’s Most Wanted.

The case seemed to go cold, until two years later when Ottis Toole confessed to the brutal murder before recanting. Ottis Toole and his partner, Henry Lee Lucas were the tag team from hell, having confessed to brutal hundreds of murders over the span of a few years, although only a few could be corroborated. During the investigation, authorities somehow lost Toole’s impounded car and the machete that he claimed he had killed Adam with. John Walsh still continued to suspect that Toole was the man who killed his son even though the case remained unsolved due to mishandling evidence.
