3. La Intrepid e l'Iphigenia. 4. Il blocco dell'Iphigenia 5. (Fonte: The Great War - The Online Video Series ENGLISH - The Great War, day by day: 23 April 1918 The Zeebrugge and Ostend raid The raids to the port of Zeebrugge and Ostend, used by the German navy as a base for U-boats and light shipping, is now considered a failure, with huge losses. A failure, however, turned into victory and an act of extreme act of courage by the Allies propaganda – eleven Victory Crosses awarded for the action. The attack on Zeebrugge begins with a diversionary attack led by the old cruiser Vindictive. 200 sailors and a battalion of Royal Marines are landed on the Zeebrugge mole with the objective of destroying German gun positions. The wind smokescreen used as a cover is however blown offshore by the changing wind and the assault forces are exposed to enemy fire, suffering many casualties, the Vindictive is forced to land in the wrong location. Of the three ships, HMS Thetis, Intrepid and Iphigenia, filled with concrete and launched against the entry of the canal, only the Intrepid and Iphigenia are sunk at the narrowest point of the canal. The canal is however obstructed only for a few days. In the pictures: 1. The Vindictive at Zeebrugge: the storming of the mole 2.
