A species of gourami endemic to Indonesia where it is only known from the islands of Bintan and Singkep. It inhabits swamps and nearby streams preferring areas with plentiful vegetation and 0.5 metres (1.6Β ft) or less in depth.

Popular as pets, siamese fighting fish or betta fish are part of the group known as labyrinth fish, or Anabantoidei. Theyβre not called this because they excel at solving mazes; rather, members of this group have a special organ called the labyrinth organ which allows these fish to take oxygen directly from the air for short periods of time-- perfect for the low-oxygenated water in which many of these species live.
