@osdium hit the heart for a starter
He doesn’t work as much as he ought to. That’s what she learns first and foremost from the outgoing agent, the one that’s handling Harry before she’s come in, fresh off of grad school, and looking for an in somewhere to get her footing. The doctor in her name doesn’t seem to get her very far, at first, despite the prestigious time spent interning and working within the hospitals about the country, no, Osborne Industries, she’s told, cares for none of that. They want to know what NEWNESS you bring, how you can innovate... and Harry’s an in, they whisper, maybe, just to get her to take the job. After all, she’s young, ambitious... pretty enough. And he’s got the cash and the willfulness that endears him to daddy dearest, doesn’t he?
So she chases him with a clipboard in hand, while she manages to work in the lab on the side. It’s a split of babysitting and real work, and inside, she can’t help but think that she’s making a difference, only half of the time. The thing with boys is that they don’t like to listen when they ought to, do they, and the ANGRIER she gets, the more satisfied he feels, because Toni’s always been the sort to keep things locked down, isn’t she. That coolness, the distance, it’s been what’s helped to make it through the tough shit in this new world, and Harry’s always looking to break things like that.
She wonders if he can help it or if it’s innate, rich boys with problems that she’ll never understand. Knocking at the front of his apartment even though she’s got the keys as her forehead presses against the fine grain of the wood, cool against her flesh, exhaustion painted beneath her eyes from another late night that’s evolved into an early morning. “Sir.” the words forced past grit teeth that refuse to provide any freedom that she’d wish for, knocking again, louder this time, before she inserts the key and turns, ready to be faced with yet some new hedonistic view. “You’re going to be LATE.”
