osctober day sixteen
prompt: pastries pairing: lando/oscar word count: 400w a/n: tiny little prequel to where i am going is right where i am
The thing Oscar likes most about baking is the precision of it. “Cooking,” his mother used to say. “Is an art form. But baking, baking is a science.”
And Oscar likes that. The measuring of ingredients. How he knows exactly the results he gets if he does exactly what’s expected of him. How everything has to be perfect for a baked good to turn out just right, down to the exact temperature of the oven.
How the simplicity of a croissant hides something much more complex, like layers and layers of butter carefully folded into the dough, creating a perfectly fluffy interior all wrapped in a crispy, flaky outside.
“Oh, shit, this is like, good as hell,” Yoga pants says, wiping the crumbs from his mouth and letting out a truly inappropriate moan.
“Uh,” Oscar says. He’s seen yoga pants before. He’s pretty sure he owns the yoga studio next door. It would explain the pants, at least. He’s never been in Oscar’s store before though, because Oscar would remember. You don’t forget eyes like that.
“Fuck, man. What do you put in these? Crack?” Yoga pants lets out another slightly inappropriate noise. Oscar glances around, partly to check if there’s anyone around to hear, partly to check if there’s anyone around to see the embarrassing red flush that’s taken residence on his cheeks.
“Butter, actually,” Oscar says. He’s trying very hard to play it cool, but Yoga Pants has a croissant crumb stuck to the corner of his mouth and Oscar desperately wants to lick it off.
“Meh, same thing,” Yoga pants says, with a shrug. “I’m Lando by the way. I own the Yoga Studio next door? I’m introducing myself because you will be seeing a lot of me,” he grins, and then specifies, “Because I need a million of these croissants like, daily. Oh, I’m also here to invite you to the local business meeting. It’s horribly boring but George insists, so,” Lando shrugs.
Oscar’s met George. He seems… Nice. Organized. “Oscar,” he says, and when Lando looks confused, adds, “My name.” He sticks out his hand, and Lando takes it. They’re big, and they’re covered in croissant crumbs, and Oscar never wants to let go.
“Nice to meet you, Oscar,” Lando says. “So, will you accompany me to the meeting tonight? Perhaps bring some croissants?”
Oscar has a horrible feeling he will go just about anywhere if Lando would ask. “Yeah,” he says. “Yeah, sure. I’ll join you.”
