Remains of rare dinosaur — one of the fastest to have lived — found in Germany
For the first time, the remains of an unusual “ostrich dinosaur” species have been unearthed in Germany. It is only the second record of this type of dinosaur in all of Europe, according to experts. The discovery was made during an annual group excavation in Balve hosted by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe’s Museum of Natural History, according to a Sept. 18 news release from the group. During the yearly dig, students and volunteers work alongside experts in search of fossils from the Early Cretaceous period, or about 125 million years ago, officials said. This year’s dig revealed the country’s first remains — a claw and metatarsal, or mid-foot, bone — of an ornithomimosaur, also known as an “ostrich dinosaur,” a find of great importance, according to experts...

Paleo-Files: Deinocheirus
Deinocheirus mirificus, whose species name means “Peculiar/Unusual Terrible Hand”, is the largest, bulkiest an heaviest member of the usually ostrich-like ornithomimosauria, and it measured up to 11 meters or 36 ft long and weighed around 6.5 metric tons. Its 2.4 m or 7.9 ft long arms were among the longest of any theropod dinosaur. Deinocheirus would have been an omnivorous, solitary specialist of foraging for grasses and other water-plants as well as fish in and around ponds, lakes, rivers and streams, and it could have used its long arms to scoop up foodstuffs from the muddy bottom to be taken care of by its hadrosaur-like beak. Some fossils of this giant ornithomimosaur also show bite marks and other feeding traces from Tarbosaurus which indicate that it was preyed upon by the latter.
