I cannot begin to tell you how much I needed this.
The last few weeks have been incredibly difficult. I haven’t felt up to doing much of anything besides going through the paces, and almost any sort of creative effort went nowhere. I clawed through the stress of work, health issues and a seemingly endless series of problems, with one thing in mind: I had the vaccine. I could go back to the OKC Zoo.
Walking through the gates for the first time in a year and a half, it felt so good. It had been so long, in fact, I veered toward the old red panda area before I got turned out and headed to Sanctuary Asia. That put me past the Lion Overlook, whose residents were more active than I remember ever seeing them. Before long, I was standing in front of the red panda habitat.
Thomas was sleeping when I got there, but he woke up a few minutes later, stared right at me then bounded down the climbing area and ran right in front of me. And just like that, I started what was a pretty remarkable day in maybe my favorite place in the world.
I’m not going to say it was perfect, and I’m certainly feeling the results of walking for four hours with my fully loaded gear bag on my back, but it was a lot of fun and I’m already looking forward to going back.
Oh, and that picture of Khyana at the top? That might be my favorite red panda photo I’ve ever taken.
