They reached the community center, where a few townsfolk had already gathered. “Evening, everyone,” Haru greeted. “Hey Haru, you alright?” Elliott opened his arms in welcome, while Shane silently slipped past them toward the back. Haru wanted to thank him, but thought better of bringing up the mayor. “Yeah, everything’s fine on my end. What about you guys?” Harvey had stayed behind to monitor medical equipment. Alex had dropped by earlier but returned home to be with George and Evelyn. As Demetrius was explaining this, Sebastian burst through the door. “Sebastian, what happened—?” “The code that wasn’t backed up to the cloud? All gone. I knew this blackout was coming and worked on my laptop, but it still got wiped! What the hell?” He glared at Demetrius. “Let me guess—some dumb animal again? Why don’t you go on one of your field studies and find out?” “We already know the cables weren’t damaged. Arguing won’t help,” Demetrius replied evenly. Pierre stepped between them, holding a flashlight. “More importantly,” he raised his voice, “we need to do something about this situation. If my store’s fridge fails, I’ll be facing serious losses. It’s a bit of a walk, but someone should check the town’s power grid—” “That won’t be necessary.” All eyes turned toward the source of the voice— It was Kent, standing in the doorway.

Kent slowly raised his head, scanning each face in the room before speaking in a calm, steady voice. “The power will be restored shortly, and this won’t happen again. Everything’s been taken care of.” A silence fell over the group. “Wait, what do you mean by that…?” Before anyone could ask further, Kent shook his head slowly, as if to stop the questions before they came. “It’s been handled. That’s all I can say.” The room remained quiet for a beat, until Demetrius stepped forward. “If you’ve taken care of what’s been happening every night, then there’s only one thing for us to say—Thank you, Kent.” “Yeah,” he replied simply. As if on cue, the streetlights flickered back on, and the community center was bathed in light once more. “The power’s back…” “I have to run! Need to check my inventory before anything melts—thank you, Kent!” Pierre bolted for the door. “I wasn’t in trouble or anything, but… thanks, man.” “Yeah.” One by one, the villagers thanked Kent and made their way out. Haru followed suit, stepping up to him. “Thank you, Kent… But doing it all alone must’ve been tough, right?” Kent narrowed his eyes slightly. “I figured you’d notice.” He smiled, faintly. “Joja’s got ties to both Sam and Jodi. And now that I think about it… you used to work there too, didn’t you?” Raising a finger to his lips, Kent added softly—just for Haru to hear: “That place has caused enough trouble. But I’m not starting a fight—not in this town.” Haru nodded. On the way back, they considered whether to go to Lewis’s house again— But Shane cut in, “It’s pointless. Just go home.” “I didn’t really get what Kent meant… what do you think?” Haru shared what had been said. Shane stopped, gazing up at the sky. “…I see. I owe Kent one.” “Wait, you understood all that?” “Of course. He told you because you used to be Joja, right? And who’s working at Joja Mart now, along with Sam and Jodi?” “That would be… Mo—”

Before Haru could say the name, Shane clamped a hand over their mouth. “Hey now. Don’t say another word. The problem’s solved. It won’t happen again. That’s enough, isn’t it?” “…Yeah.” Haru still didn’t understand how Kent had figured it all out. “He probably saw something while picking Jodi up,” Shane said, turning away. “Not that I’d know.” Haru looked at him with admiration. “You’re amazing, Shane. You really look out for everyone.” “Huh? Where’s that coming from? I just happened to be there— Aw, shut up!” Shane waved his flashlight around and stormed off. Haru jogged to catch up, finding him waiting outside Marnie’s house. “What Kent said—that’s just my guess, okay? Don’t believe everything you hear.” “Got it. I won’t dig any deeper.” As Haru hesitated, wondering whether to ask about Lewis— Shane brought a hand to his mouth and whispered: “If you really wanna know, go take a look. At first light—when the rooster crows.”
