Ah, what a wonderful question! I was always in love with the idea that River is the TARDIS in human form. I spent all of seasons 5 and 6 waiting for some climactic schism in time to pull open the heart of the TARDIS and force it into a physical manifestation. To me, the TARDIS is the only thing it makes sense for the Doctor to be married to. Also, it would have explained her Gallifreyan-esque ability to regenerate (being concieved on a space ship, even a time-and-space ship DOES NOT CUT IT).
So of course, the all-important side note here has to be that I am 90% convinced that Neil Gaiman had the same theory, and it inspired his season 6 episode, The Doctor’s Wife. The only reason that’s not 100%, is because the other 10% believes a much more elaborate ruse: that Neil Gaiman had that theory, was bitter about the fact Moffat wouldn’t tell him if it was right or wrong, devised a plan to write The Doctor’s Wife in such a way it would ruin that theory, and force Moffat to tell him he was right and would have to write something else... except Moffat was too stubborn to admit gaiman figured it out and changed his entire endgame to the drastically less compelling and massively impractical theory that River was his companion’s stolen baby. That somehow has superpowers.
