We are all connected to the ocean. * Oceans cover 70% of the Earth's surface � and contain 97% of the Earth's water. * Oceans hold around 50 times more carbon than the atmosphere. * 60 - 80% of all the oxygen we breathe is produced in the ocean. * If all the world's ice melted, the oceans would rise about 66 metres * Humans remove more fish from the oceans than their populations can reproduce. * Chemical contaminants not native to the oceans, are being found in dangerously high concentrations in marine life. * We throw 8 million metric tons of plastic rubbish in the oceans every year (and increasing). * A plastic bottle can take 450 years to break down to the size of a grain of sand, with plastic bottles from the 1970’s being found intact on the ocean floor 2-3 km below the surface.
