Mentioned briefly in a few passages mostly in reference to Orphic traditions. Ophion and his consort Eurynome are claimed to be the rulers of Olympus prior to Cronus and Rhea, who wrestle them off the throne and toss them down in to the encircling sea Oceanus. Some scholars like Lycophron call them Titans, while in other sources they are assumed to be epithets of Oceanus and Tethys. Some also claim he could be equivalent to the primordial beings Chronos or Phanes.
