Email Marketing- How to Increase The Open Rates?
First, let me ask you a question. How many unread emails that you have in your inbox now? 100? 300? Or thousands?

We all get tons emails everyday no matter it’s in the type of promotional, transactional, retention, news or more. A lot of them that we are never opened because we tend to find the one that is more important to us and the one that subject line is interesting enough. Therefore, the chances of your emails are easily to be ignored unless you have a better SUBJECT LINE that can attract people right away.

According to the subject line study from MailChimp, it analyzed that “the open rates for over 200 million emails. Open rates ranged from 93% to 0.5%.” The interest scales of opening the emails are from personal messages, affiliations, timely news to stale newsletters and other offers that are too good to be true.
Here is the result of subject lines that with highest and lowest open rate.
Few tips that can help to increase the open rates in my opinion:
1. To keep your subject line SIMPLE! (The most obvious one)
MailChimp indicated, “The best email subject lines are short, descriptive and provide the reader with a reason to explore your message further.” On the other hand, those emails subject line that are splashy or cheesy are easily to be ignored. Also, it is important to watch the length of the subject line; the study proves that it should keep it to 50 characters or less. For instance, order status- something that has specific purpose.
2. Personalization- Localization
The research shows that the subject lines including a recipient’s first name or last name do not increase the open rate because sometimes readers might assume these emails as spam; however, providing localization such as city names or location specific offers would improve the open rates. For instance, Gilt City is doing a good job on this- always sending me emails with subject lines promoting deals in New York City.
3. Questions in email subject lines
Asking readers questions is an easy way to make them engage and also create curiosity for them. In addition, most of the time questions are tended to be short and entice the reader to find out the answer. Sometimes, readers even know the answer but they just want to confirm the answer. The most high rating ones are such as” do you think”, “how do you”, and “what do you” and more. Or even just questions that are emotional -

These three types of the subject lines that I think to me is the most engaging ones, of course, there are others such as funny, shocking, single-word, or email subject lines that with numbers or lists and others. How to Increase Open-Rates for Advocacy Alerts
A key step in creating an effective advocacy campaign is an intriguing email subject line. Powerful subject lines compel recipients to open an email upon receiving it, meaning that subject lines are essentially the lifeblood of an advocacy campaign. Unopened emails = no actions taken, so we curated a list of important tips to assist you in creating effective subject lines to increase open rates, specifically when pushing out advocacy alerts.
Creativity. A subject line that peaks curiosity increases your open rate metrics. To this end, posing a question in the subject line has also proven to be an effective way to increase open rates.
Keep the subject line short, and to the point. Keep it specifically between 28-39 characters.
Deadlines create a sense of urgency, and encourage recipients to open emails immediately. In a world where iPhones are the name of the game, having a deadline laced into your subject line will motivate your recipient to click open when scanning through his/her mobile mail application.
Target your audience. Capture the attention of your recipients by using language that speaks directly to them through the subject line, engaging your audience and compelling them to click open. If you are emailing the membership of a professional medical association, direct them to open your message by providing pertinent information that is geared towards the doctors who are receiving the email. Speak the language of your contacts, because you know your audience best (i.e, what would motivate these specific recipients to take action?)
Geolocation. If you are sending an email out on behalf of an organization that operates solely within one state, one county, or one school district- utilize your geographical limits as an asset. Get the attention of your membership by creating a subject line that hits close to home...literally! (i.e., “Tell Lewis County Supervisors to Save Lake Ada”)
Relevancy. Many people will not open an email if they believe it to be spam. To avoid having your emails clicked over to the Spam folder, refrain from using too many CAPS or a load of exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lastly, Analyze. Review your email open rates and find out what works best for your organization.

5 Ways To Improve Your Subject Lines
by DeAnna Caldwell, CRM Specialist
Between growing competition for inbox attention and increasingly stricter spam filters, getting your customers to see your email - let alone open your email - can be a real challenge. Luckily, a few small tweaks to your subject line can improve not only your open rate, but also your deliverability.
Personalize Your Subject Line
Personalizing your subject line tends to provide measurably better open rates. While listing a recipient’s name is a common practice, also consider including past purchases, previous actions on your site or even the user’s location. But a word to the wise: Be sure to not overuse or misuse your database information. Sending too much personal information may come off as “spammy.”
Keep it Short
In today’s digital world, about 65% of all emails sent are opened on mobile! When optimizing your email for mobile, keep in mind the limited number of characters recipients can see on their device. What may appear as an engaging subject line on desktop won’t have the same pull on mobile if your subject line copy is cut off. Standard email clients typically display 50 characters or less, but mobile typically shows just 30 to 44. For best results, be sure to view your subject line on mobile before sending.
Ask a Question or Include a Call To Action
Engaging with the recipient in the form of a question or call to action can help differentiate your email from the rest. You can also engage your recipient even more simply by adding “you” or “you’re” into the subject line.
Avoid Spam Words
Avoid words that are typically flagged in spam filters. Top offenders include “free,” “cheap,” TOO MANY CAPS, symbols, and anything overly salesy. Think of them like the wacky inflatable arm man.
A/B Test
Of course the best way to know which subject lines earn the best open rates is to test, test, test! A/B testing allows you to optimize for the best open rate possible. An A/B test is a simple experiment where you test one version of your email against another (in this case, two different subject lines) and then measure the results. Through A/B testing, you gain insight into what works best, and learn how to pique the interest of your target audience.
