This is an interesting blog post by Graham Attwell describing how when developing open source software, it can be the idea (or design) as much as the code which is of value, and he ends up advocating an open design process. This idea resonates with me (as a non programmer) - when we designed the Charting tools, implementing them as a specific piece of software was almost secondary to working through the ideas of 'What would a tool that used goals as a social object look like?'
