Came across this contemplative radio snippet that’s part of The Open Ears Project (maybe some British educational channel) and was first published in early 2024. The first 8 or so minutes is Tom Hiddleston’s account of a climbing trip he took in Scotland in 2003, before his final year at RADA. Playing prominently in the background of his story is “Spiegal im Spiegal,” the classical number he is discussing. Listening is a very calming experience and the actual point of the account. It’s so calming, I think it might’ve put me to sleep that first time. Warning: Do not listen while operating machinery.

Hearing recently on Jimmy Kimmel about Tom’s childhood obsession with radio production brought this clip to mind. Guess I had dismissed it then as elegant, irrelevant dorkiness, but had to rethink it in the light of Tenzing.

When you think about it, both Tom and Zawe have been lowkey radio personalities, making appearances on multiple shows, and in Zawe’s case, performing hosting duties (and this amount is not even touching on the ones we know the sources of). I’m thinking both must’ve acquired such training at school, and that she might at times she thought this might become one of her 44 jobs.
