Chapter 10: DĂși hÇi and Shou
Sirius glared at the snake, which was currently a bracelet on Remusâ hand. âHow come it doesnât bite you?â His eyes never leaving the gold snake.
Remus shrugged nonchalantly, unperturbed as he leaned against the lower walls of the quarterdeck. âHe likes me.â He continues looking over his notes in a worn leather notebook.
âWhat do you mean he, itâs a sword, pretty sure it doesnât need pronouns.â Sirius had been tasked with tying knots, eyeing Remus opening with contempt.
âAnd yet we call ships, she.â
âThatâs different, youâre talking about a sword as if it can understand what youâre saying.â
Remus glances up for a brief moment, an unreadable expression upon his face as he considers his answer. âBecause he can.â
Sirius pauses, âHow?â He raises a skeptic's brow. Remus doesnât respond, ignoring him in favor of continuing his work in the book. Sirius simply rolled his eyes, continuing to tie the knots.
Remus continued to have Sirius work on the ship for many hours. Sirius was not let out of Remusâ sight. And at small moments, Sirius would hear a soft humming sound. As if metal was vibrating. Sirius would look around to try to see where the humming was coming from, but no one seemed to notice.
And every time Sirius focused to find the source of the humming, it would stop. Oddly enough, Remus chuckled to himself softly throughout the day. Insane, Sirius thought as he was sent to retire for the night. Remus threatened another full day of work the next morning. He was definitely insane.
The next day, Remus was once again immersed in his work with that worn leather book of his. Sirius continued to work, mopping the deck under the beating sun. Then the humming returned. He ignored it at first. But as the day drew on, he noticed that it only seemed clearer to hear whenever he was nearby Remus.
âAre you humming?â Sirius prompted.
âNo.â Remus look strained as if it physically wounded him to dignify Sirius with a response to such a stupid question. So Sirius carried on. Until he couldnât take it more.
âWhat is that incessant humming?! It sounds like ringing metal!â Sirius cried out, searching for any possible source of what that horrid humming was.
Remus froze at the words, finally looking up to Sirius. âWait⊠you can hear it?â
âIâve been hearing it for nearly two days!â Sirius retorted with a dramatic turn of his head.
âI thought it was dramatics,â Remus replied simply.
âPlease tell me you hear it too.â Sirius ran a hand through his black locks. âOtherwise, I think I still have some of that thingâs,â he pointed to the gold snake on Remusâ wrist, âvenom in my veins.â
âYes, though not humming, itâs words.â Remus closes the book, placing his quill as a marker in his place. He wouldnât dare fold the pages of the journal. âThereâs no venom.â
Sirius stared at the tawny-haired boy dubiously. âWhat? What do you mean, itâs words?â
âMore a song really.â He continued as if the ebony-haired pirate had never spoken.
Sirius raises a quizzical brow, âAlright, Iâll bite. Who is singing?â
Remus gave the man a pointed look, growing bothered at the simple conversation, âDĂși hÇi.â
Sirius stared unblinkingly. âYouâre joking. A sword?â
âWhy would I joke? Over humming?â
âWhy would a sword sing?â Sirius countered.
âIt canât physically speak to us, so it makes a near-silent song.â A male voice replies.
Sirius turned to the helm, the First Mate was resting his arms on the railing, his legs crossed, a wide grin on his face.
âAnd not everyone can hear it. Which is why Remus thought you were merely jesting.â Quinn explained.
Siriusâ eyes flickered as he looked between the two. âCan you hear the humming then?â
Quinn nods in reply, âI can. Though itâs a bit different for me, I had to train in order to hear it. Itâs a process, but since then, I hear the swordâs song.â He glances down to Remus, âRemus had to train as well.â
âSo why can I hear it?â Sirius frowned.
Quinn smiled. âBecause you were bitten by DĂși hÇi. Its venom ran the course through your veins, as you so kindly pointed out earlier, it increased your exposure to the swordâs properties rather quickly.â
Sirius glared at the snake. DĂși hÇi took it upon himself to come alive and hiss at the pirate in retaliation.
Quinn tilted his head as he tsked. âDĂși hÇi, be nice. Your venom is very potent you know.â
The snake simply hissed, Quinn stuck his tongue out with a low chuckle. Sirius couldnât help but watch the interaction with awe and mild horror.
Remus watched silently, amused at the interaction. A small smile upon his face as he watched the little snake.
âIt can actually understand youâŠâ Sirius spoke lowly. Disbelief and amazement on his face.
Quinn looked back to the pirate. âHe is alive, so of course he can.â
âA language, like an actual living language that people learn and understand?â
Quinn smiled once more. âWell, itâs more like a melodious tune. There are no actual words in the Language of the Spirit Swords.â He chuckled at that. âIt was a pain to learn.â
âThe sword is alive, it has a spirit. And they are very aware and in tune with their environment. DĂși hÇi is the spirit of the sword. He was born when he was forged but named by his master. My sword is the same.â
Quinn reached for the sword at his side, brushing his fingertips across the hilt. A hum reached their ears. Siriusâ eyes widened.
âHow does one come across a sword like yours?â Sirius found himself asking.
Quinn clicks his tongue, tilting his head side to side, contemplating his answer. âItâs a complicated answer. You usually donât find a sword like ours. Not to mention they could reject you as their master.â
âWhy?â
âOh, there are many reasons. Personalities donât match. The swordmaster could be cruel. They could physically harm a swordâ and yes, you can harm a sword. Sword and master could reject each other. The sword could even be picky. Shou, my own sword is picky about everything.â Quinn paused. âItâs a lot like choosing a horse really.â He chuckled.
Shou, a wide sword with a solid black sheath adorned in gold accents, hummed loudly. Quinn winced a bit but otherwise ignored it. Remus also winced.
The hilt of the sword had red and black cross stitching etched the smooth grip. In the center handle, there was a small lionâs head, engraved in gold, much like the snake of DĂși hÇi.
Sirius simply continued to watch in astonishment, his lips parted. He simply couldnât believe it.
âShou and DĂși hÇi were forged for us, to fit our personalities. But even then, it does not guarantee the sword will accept you.â
Sirius found himself nodding as if he were a student. For once in his entire life, Sirius was behaving like a diligent apprentice. Remus stared at Sirius with perplexity. He has never seen the pirate this quiet for so long. Quinn looked between the two teens with a knowing grin.
âWell, I think thatâs enough for todayâs lesson class. Youâre dismissed.â He chuckles. Leaving the two teens to their own devices.
Remus nodded his head in acknowledgment as Quinn left them. Sirius carried on with his task of mopping the deck. Silently.
As the day turned to night, Remus looked at the rising moon, noting that it was nearly full.

Chapter 9: The Escape
Remus was doing his best not to punch the pirate in the face, or at the very least refrain from tossing him into the open sea, which was a true testament to his restraint because the desire was overwhelming. Walking up to the deck, Sirius followed and Remus was praying to God for him to kindly shut up.
âI want to see him, who knows what youâve done to him.â
âI already told you, he doesnât wish to be anywhere near you, and I share his sentiment.â He looked at the pirate and for a moment, spotting pain in the otherâs storm blue eyes.
But like a lightning strike, it was gone in a second. Sirius hardened his gaze once more.
âSo youâve been telling him lies then.â Sirius sneered.
Remus scoffed, âContrary to the Captainâs reputation of being callous and merciless, he would never lay a hand on a child. He only took Regulus because he was treated worse than cattle.â
At that, Sirius had nothing further to say, what could he say when it was the truth?
An awkward silence followed the two like an anchor as the tawny-haired boy turned and continued walking on deck, the distant voice of a crewmember calling Remus for assistance. With a sigh, he turns to the ebony-haired boy.
âI have to go, but donât do anything stupid.â
âWhat do you think Iâm going to do? Sprout wings and fly away?â Sirius scoffed.
Remus rolls his eyes, giving a pointed look. âIn this world? I wouldnât put it past you.â He turns back around and walks off.
Sirius simply shook his head as the pompous tawny-haired boy walked off. He honestly couldnât fathom why anyone would allow him on this ship. Then again, Sirius thought, it suited the infamous White Sea Serpent to have someone like him aboard his ship.
Pompous, the whole lot of them.
The crew were fine in his opinion, they minded their own business. Which probably explained why they were ignoring him as if he were the plague.
Deciding upon himself that he might as well look around, considering no one was really paying attention to him. He might even be lucky and find his brother. Motivated at the prospect of finding his lost brother, Sirius set out to search the entire ship. He went down to the kitchens, then to the cargo hold which, astonishingly, only had two barrels of wine and not a single barrel of rum.
There were many things Sirius could forgive, but not having rum was a crime he could never forgive. However, there was a ridiculous amount of white grain, labeled rice. And some strange red and green foul-smelling thing that made Sirius gag.
Next, Sirius decided to wander through the hallways of the cabins. Checking through the glass windows to peek inside, in the hopes of spotting his brother. At last, he reached a cabin door where a woman dressed in white sat in a rocking chair, holding two small boys, resting their heads close to her bosom, her eyes were closed and her lips were parted as she sang a soft lullaby that Sirius couldnât hear through the door.
One of the boys was who Sirius had been searching for. Regulus was being rocked to sleep.
Regulus looked, in peace. His face had a healthy flush, his cheeks had rounded in only just a few days. His clothes were clean and he looked properly dressed. The woman in white, rocked gently, rubbing both of their backs.
Regulus shifted in his sleep, the woman gently lulled the child back into a deeper slumber, shifting to her arms to accommodate the changed positions so Regulus wouldnât hurt his neck as he slept. The woman smiled as she continued her song, never once did she open her eyes.
Sirius couldnât help but feel a pang of pain in his chest. Oh, how many times did he long for his mother to hold him as the woman in white did so for the boys, Sirius had lost count. Lost all hope of his mother ever giving them an ounce of affection.
And when Regulus was born, Sirius prayed that his mother would at least show affection to him. Instead, she treated them as nothing more than pests that she must learn to tolerate. Sirius tried to take to the brunt of their âdiscipline,â but there was only so much he could do as a young boy.
And as soon as Sirius was able, he escaped that hell hole. Leaving Regulus behind. He knew that what he did would only make things worse for Regulus, their mother would take it out on him, and Regulus wouldnât have Sirius to take the brunt of it. Sirius cursed himself for being weak. Sirius had every intention of coming back for him, to give Regulus a better life. The tawny-haired boyâs words echo in his head.
âHe only took Regulus because he was treated worse than cattle.â
Sirius wasnât blind. Their mother never once loved them. Yet here was this woman, who was not Regulusâ mother, tenderly cradled him, sung him a soft lullaby, rocking him to sleep, as if he was her own, would make anyone think she loved Regulus.
And with how at peace Regulus looked, he might even love her as well. How cruel, for a mother to loathe her offspring, only for a stranger to show them affection and kindness. The boy was right, the captain of this ship didnât kidnap Regulus, the captain saved him.
And just like before, Sirius came to a decision he thought was best. He will leave Regulus here. But this time, he was leaving Regulus in a place where he was clearly cared for and treated well. Regulus didnât need him. With a heavy heart, Sirius turned away.
Back on deck, Sirius peered over the railing. He couldnât swim back to shore, they were too far from land. But, he lamented. Spotting a lifeboat hanging by ropes. He could steal a boat.
Remus managed to finally resolve the problem the crewmate had been dealing with. Returning to the deck, his eyes scanned for the ebony-haired male. His eyes narrowing the longer he searched and still not finding the pirate.
âCaptain!â A crewman called. Pointing towards the open sea, âThe pirate is making a run for it!â
Of course, he would try to run. Only seemed to be about time. Rushing to the side of the ship, Remus glared at the jolly pirate, watching as his figure grew further from the ship.
He wasnât even taking Regulus with him?! That good for nothing, pirate!
Captain Hua merely raised a brow, watching the pirate rowing away with an amused smirk. âHow daring.â
âBeen planning huh?â Opal chuckles as she stands against the base of a cargo net.
Quinn smirked, crossing his arms as he leaned forward on the railing. He looked at the greek woman. âOh, thisâll be interesting to witness.â
âShall we turn the ship?â The crewman asked.
âThat wonât be necessary,â He looked to Remus, âRemus, please bring Brielle up on deck.â
Remus turned at Captain Huaâs request, nodding in confirmation. Briskly walking across the deck, he couldn't help but wonder why Sirius had decided to forgo his entire reason for ambushing the ship? Did he just not care about his brother anymore? Or had something happened for him to ultimately decide that perhaps Regulus was alright?
There was nothing he could decipher for himself, he muses, as he wouldnât know the thoughts of the ebony-haired pirate. Or find answers for his theories. Sirius Black, the youngest pirate captain of their age. As infuriating and insufferable as he may be, there was more to him.
If what Brielle said was true, then perhaps there was more to Sirius Black than being a complete idiot.
This was the second time he considered the thought. But why? Standing at the base of the stairs below deck, brought him back to the matter at hand. He found himself at the door to Brielleâs room much sooner than he had anticipated.
âBrielle!â
Sirius couldnât help but grin as he rowed farther away. He looked back to the ship, the captain, the first mate, and the tawny-haired boy were all watching him. He was over surprised that they werenât turning the ship around.
Oh well, more time for him to get farther away.
He heard a loud splash behind him, theyâre probably sending another lifeboat out to catch him, he assumes, chuckling to himself. There was no way they could catch him from this distance unless they used the ship.
The boat lurched. Rocking Sirius sharply, causing him to drop the oars. Sirius looked around the small boat, he didnât see anything, did he hit something? The boat rocked again. Sirius looked back to the ship, and from what he could tell, more people had gathered to watch him. The crew seemed to be laughing. As if they knew something he didnât.
The boat was rocked nearly capsized this time, Sirius gripped the sides of the tiny boat in panic. His eyes searched everywhere, was he closer to land than he expected? Did he hit a rockbed? A coral reef? Just what exactly did he hit?
Or, did something hit him?
There, from the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of white. But it was gone when he turned his head. His breath hitched as he saw a clawed hand grip the front of the boat, pulling it into the water. Sirius backed up, gripping the boat for dear life. Whatever it was, it was clearly strong.
The hand sunk into the water just as the front of the boat, ahead rose from the water. Sirius could hear his heart pounding.
âOh hell, donât tell me youâre part of that lot too!â Sirius found himself shouting.
The head had dark hair, pale skin, and two slitted eyes with finned ears, the head opened its cursed mouth, revealing a row of pearly white fangs. Sirius most certainly, did not scream.
The head then dared to smile like a mad man, then dove underwater. The boat shot upwards back towards the surface. Then it started to move, a rope pulling it along, as the thing pulled the rope.
The boat moved fast, then it started gaining speed. In just a few moments, Sirius was already within swimming distance of the ship. He started to panic that the thing pulling his small boat was going to make him crash. At the last possible second, the boat came to an abrupt halt, sending Sirius forward.
The crew on the ship laughed at the haggard sight of the pirate.
âSo kind of you to join us again Mr. Black.â Captain Hua spoke. âDid you have a nice swim?â
At that, the head dived down, its scaly tail sending a splash right at him. He was soaked.
Sirius couldnât be certain, but he swears that he saw a gleam in the captainâs eye. âWho are you?â Sirius couldnât help but ask. He was no fool, that creature definitely belonged to the insane captain with the accursed sword.
âA man of many talents.â Was all the captain said.
The pirate was pulled back aboard the ship, the crew members took in the sight of the soaked pirate before returning to their posts. The first mate threw a blanket at the pirate to dry off. The tawny-haired boy had returned, a small smile on his face from when he tried to contain his laughter.
Remus looked to the pirate after a minute for composure, shaking his head in exasperation. It was rather a hilarious sight, and once again this was a new record towards Siriusâ idiocy.
Quinn completely found the scene amusing, his smirk still clearly evident upon his face.
The sound of dripping water caught Sirius's ear, turning, he saw the hideous head that dragged him back to this awful ship pulled aboard, The head then started to sprout bloody human-looking legs from its tail! The finny fish-like traits vanishing before his eyes, the captain wrapping a blanket around it.
Siriusâ eyes widened, it was the woman in white! The one who tended to Regulus!
âYou!â
The woman, no, the monstrous head, looked to him. She made a mock gasp, her eyes widening. âYou!â She responded. A wide grin on her face. Her teeth the same shade of pearly white.
âI take it you had your fun?â The captain eyed the head.
If it werenât for the fact of what Sirius just went through, he would have called the woman handsome.
âI was only teasing.â The head answered the captain, who only shook his head in amusement.
Sirius decided right there. He did not like her. Nope. Not one bit.
The captain led the head back to wherever it was they were heading to. Sirius turned to Remus when he saw the tawny-haired boy approach.
âYou let that thing near the children?â
âI see that you have been sneaking around. And the children are safest with her. Not to mention they love her. Everyone loves Brielle.â
âI donât love her. In fact, I dare say I hate her.â
âWell, thatâs a personal problem then, not mine. And why is that? Might I ask?â Remus tilts his head in mock curiosity. âIs it because she takes better care of your brother than you and sheâs not even the same species?â
At that Sirius, only glared, he turned away.
âRemus.â The captain called from his post on the helm. âYou have a slippery one on your hands, donât you?â
âIt would appear so captain. I canât take my eyes off him for a moment.â
The captain nodded, then reached for his sword. Untying it from his belt, then tossed Remus the dark green sword.
Remus caught the hilt and sheath of the sword with careful hands, looking down to the golden snake that could quite simply kill him in one bite. Then he looks back to the captain with a questioning look, âAre you sure?â
âPerhaps it will give Mr. Black the incentive to behave himself.â Captain Hua gave Sirius a knowing glance before he looked back to Remus. âBesides, he missed you.â
With nothing further to add, the Captain turned away.
Sirius looked to the tawny-haired boy. âWho?â
Remus simply held out the sword towards Sirius, a smirk on his lips. Sirius instantly backed up when Remus brought the accursed sword closer to him. âDĂși hÇi.â
Sirius knew that sword, he remembered it quite well, and would kindly prefer to be as far away from it as possible thank you. He did not wish to be bitten again. But up close, Sirius reluctantly had to admire the sword.
It was a wide sword with a dark forest green sheath with gold accents that looked coral. The hilt of the sword had a metallic gold snake, with emerald gemstones for eyes. It blinked, Sirius backed away.
The tiny gold snake came to life, hissing softly as it moved towards the boys' hand. Siriusâ blood froze. Was it going to bite him?
The gold snake slithered up Remusâ hand, then coiled its cold metallic body around his wrist. It looked to Remus for a moment, flicking its tongue. Remus only smiled at the tiny deadly snake.
These people are insane, thought Sirius.
As if reading his thoughts, the gold snake turned to Sirius and hissed loudly. Sirius didnât need to be told to stay away from that thing.
The snake looked smug. If that were somehow possible? Remus chuckled at DĂși hÇiâs antics. âI think he gets the message DĂși hÇi.â
Satisfied with terrifying the pirate, the snake hissed softly. Then winked at Sirius. These people were most certainly insane. The snake rested its head on the back of Remusâ hand and became inanimate once more. Its emerald eyes shimmering brightly with the rays of the sun.

Chapter 11: Stop Trying to Rescue Me!
The Dragonâs Pearl had been sailing for nearly three weeks now, Remus for once was a lot quieter than usual Sirius had to note. It was almost unnerving, it was as if he had turned into a completely different person. Sirius often found himself blinking, because he swore that Remusâ eyes glowed amber at times. But no one ever mentioned anything, so he decided to keep his observations to himself.
Remus gave Sirius a list, a bloody long list, of chores for Sirius to do that would last him four days.
âYour wrist,â Remus ordered.
Sirius stared at him skeptically, âWhat?â
Remus slowly blinked, as if it pained him to be in the idiotic presence that is Sirius Black. Instead of dignifying the pirate with an answer, he simply grabbed the pirate's left wrist, firmly clasping his hand and gripping his forearm with the other.
Sirius tried to free himself of his hold but to no avail. Rather, it seemed Remus was much stronger than he appears.
DĂși hÇi, well the gold snakelet part of him, slithered over from Remus' hand, and onto Sirius' arm, coiling around his wrist and becoming inanimate once more. Its emerald eyes gleaming at Sirius.
Sirius wanted to die right then and there.
If he wasnât a prisoner on the ship before, he most certainly was one now. Remus only glared at the pirate, as if telling him, stop being dramatic.
âBehave.â That was all Remus said as he pointed to the snakelet before he walked below deck.
And that was the last Sirius saw of Remus in two days.
Two days of pure hell.
Sirius had, rather reluctantly, done his chores, but only because every time he attempted to forgo his tasks, the snakelet would animate to life and hiss at the pirate in warning. Captain Hua would smirk in amusement. First Mate Scamander nearly fell overboard as he laughed.
And Sirius suspected that if he even so much as stepped one foot off the ship, the snakelet would not hesitate to bite him. But after the last two incidents, the first being bitten by a metallic sword snake, and the second being a head attached to a mermaid, Sirius wasnât so tempted to jump into the open ocean. Especially since he felt his hair on the nape of his neck stand on end, as if someone was watching him from beneath the waves.
Sirius had searched for the unusually quiet second mate of the ship, but to no avail. He did try to talk to Regulus, but the terrible head refused to let the pirate see the boy because Regulus didnât want to see him. So, Sirius spent an unusual amount of time in the ship library. Sleeping.
And Sirius was in the library asleep when he awoke in the middle of the night to someone shaking him awake. And whispering his name. Sirius nearly fell off the chair.
âJames?! What are you doing here?!â Sirius whispered loudly, rising to his feet.
âRescuing you! Whatâs it look like!â The unruly-haired pirate grinned. âNow letâs go before someone catches us.â
âWait James-â Sirius tried, but James was already dragging him out of the library, and onto the deck. There Sirius could see his ship, the Star Weaver, and Lily, Frank, Alice, Peter, Marlene, and Dorcas all waving them over.
James jumped onto the railing, grabbing a rope, Sirius dug his heels onto the deck.
âJames, stop! I canât leave the ship!â
âAnd why the bloody hell not?â James glanced around in the unexpected delay, an unceremonious splash silenced them.
They held their breath, staring at where they heard the source of the splash. After a few seconds, Sirius turned back to James and whispered.
âBecause the second I take so much as a step off of this ship, I will die.â In emphasis, Sirius held up his left wrist, to show the very much awake and angry-looking snakelet that hissed at James.
James stared at it with very wide eyes and gulped. Sirius moved the snakelet down. âDo you want me to die, James?!â
âJust take it off!â
âI canât! Itâs enchanted! Itâs alive or something!â Sirius winced, the snakelet coiling around his wrist tighter as it tried to strike James in the eye.
âWhat?!â James looked at the Snakelet. Terror on his face.
âAww, you listened in class!â A familiar male voice interjects, âIâm so touched.â
Quinn stood at the deck, leaning against the base wall below the stern of the ship. He pushed off the wall nonchalantly, as he slowly walked towards the two pirates. âAnd the award for idiotic pirate of the year goes toâŠâ Placing a hand upon the hilt of his sword, he leans forward, grinning madly. âNone other than James Potter.â
Ropes snatched up the pirates one by one from the Star Weaver and tied them all up on the beam of the mast in the center of the ship.
âCongratulations. There is no prize.â Opal chuckles as she hops down from the cargo nets, pretending to wipe the dust from her hands.
All of the pirates glared at Captain Hua and First Mate Scamander. Sirius was spared from being tied up. Peter glared, or at least, he attempted to look like he was glaring, he mostly looked sick to his stomach.
âHow come he doesnât get tied up?â
âBecause your Captain wasnât actively trying to escape. This time.â Captain Hua answered smoothly.
Siriusâ crew could say what they wanted about the White Sea Serpent, but after spending nearly two weeks on The Dragonâs Pearl, Sirius knew the Captain was more than fair. And Sirius most definitely had been behaving.
Sirius almost preened at that. Someone like Captain Hua, The White Sea Serpent, acknowledged Sirius as a fellow Captain, even if it was to an inexperienced crew. Sirius hated it. He loathed it, because it was a feeling he wished he would feel if his own family acknowledged him, bothered to even look at him. He buried the feeling.
âHow kind of you to join us, I donât believe we had the chance to meet.â Captain Hua looked down to James and the rest of the crew.
âThough I suppose now isnât the best time to exchange pleasantries.â Quinn commented, âA shame really.â
Lily, a bright red-haired young lady with bright green eyes glared silently at the older men. âIf youâre going to kill us just get on with it.â
âSweetie, youâd already be dead if we planned to kill you.â Opal cannot help but roll her eyes.
âNot to mention our Captain doesnât kill children,â Quin added, looking over the young pirates. The pirate seethed in silent rage at the term. âWhen was the last time you even had a proper meal? And not just biscuits. Youâre skinnier than a gull.â
âWe are not children!â James retorted.
âOh? Youâre not?â Opal tilts her head. âHow old are you?â
â17 summers.â
âOh forgive me, 17 summers, practically grown men and women then,â Quinn responded sarcastically.
âIf you are grown, then I see no reason as to why the captain shouldnât kill you. After all, you trespassed onto his ship twice, and the first was a warning.â Opal crossed her arms.
Captain Hua remained as stoic as ever, simply watching the young pirates realize that they threw away the small mercy bestowed on them. Sirius couldnât help but grimace.
The whispers of a singular melodious voice broke the eerie silence which had fallen upon the deck at the realization. Growing ever more vociferous in each passing second, the song reached the deck and the sailors who stood upon it. One by one, more voices began to accompany the harmony. Until there was no escape from the source. The deep blue waves seemed to carry the ship forward at the whims of the melody, as if being willed on command.
It was hypnotic, powerfulâ heavenly even, and yet something seemed entirely wrong.
Quinn doubled over, his hands clutching his head, an agonizing wail of pain fell from his lips.
âQuinn!â Opal quickly reached for him.
Sirius, James, Frank, and every manâs eyes on the ship, became cloudy as if in a daze. Opal looked across the deck, the women were unaffected by the sound. Opalâs eyes widened. She knew what this was. Captain Hua looked to the greek woman before they both ran off in different directions. Captain Hua went for his men, Opal released Lily, Alice, Marlene, and Dorcas.
âWhat are you-â Lily began to ask, but Opal interrupted her.
âTie Sirius and everyone else up!â Opal ordered, rushing back to Quinnâs side, his wails grew louder each second he heard the song.
Captain Hua would stop each one of his men who attempted to fall overboard, knocking them unconscious.
âWhy isnât he being tied up?!â Alice shouted over the song.
âHeâs unaffected! Just stop them if they try to remove the ropes.â
âThen what about him?!â Marlene, a blonde-haired young lady with bright green eyes, motioned to Quinn.
âHeâs resisting it! To him, the song is a horrible screeching in his head, but to the others, itâs heavenly!â Opal yelled as she wrapped her arms around Quinnâs torso, keeping him from falling overboard as he tried to escape the noise.
The sound of snapping wood caught everyoneâs attention, turning to look at the ship the pirates sailed on. The Sea Weaver was sinking. Fast.
âNo!â Lily shouted, rushing to the railing. Captain Hua grabbed her by her waist. âLeave it! Itâs beyond repair, there is nothing you can do!â
Lily tried to push the Captain off, âNo! We can fight them off!â
âThose Sirens will kill you before you ever make it across.â
Lily only screamed in frustration, Min-Jun let her drop to the deck, rushing to the railing as he saw a clawed hand reach up. The Captain of the Dragonâs Pearl struck the climbing siren down. Opal, once certain that the wailing man wasnât in danger of falling, began to do the same. Alice, Marlene, and Dorcas followed her lead.
Again, and again, and again the sirens climbed up the ship, and there was only so much rope to hold the sailors from their watery deaths.
âThereâs too many! We have to abandon ship!â Dorcas, a young lady with chin-length dark hair and bright blue eyes, shouted.
âWeâd sooner die out in open water!â Lily answered as she slashed another siren down, not without receiving a scratch on her forearm.
âDo they ever stop singing?!â Opal looked to Min-Jun, who was fighting off multiple sirens at once.
âNo!â Min-Jun kicked one siren right in its face, pushing it back into the water, he looked back to Opal as she shielded Quinn. âThey will only continue to sing louder until they start their feeding frenzy.â
âFeeding Frenzy?!â Alice screeched.
âOh, how wonderful.â Opal sneered as she stabbed another siren, with pleasure.
âWe just need to hold them off a little longer!â Min-Jun gritted out.
âFor what?! For them to eat us alive!?â Alice yelled out.
The singing only grew louder until a new melody broke through the haunting melodious song and hissing with a single voice. Min-Jun visibly relaxed. âFor that.â
A distance away, were two mers. One was a female with a white tail with faint blue spots, the other a male with an amber tail which complimented his glowing amber eyes. And they were quickly rushing to the ship.
âOh great! More of them!â Lily sneered, looking back to the siren in front of her.
âThose arenât sirens!â Opal smiled in relief.
âTheyâre mermaids.â Captain Hua finished.
âWhatâs the difference?!â Marlene demanded, grunting as her blade slashed another siren.
The female mermaid stopped a distance away from the ship.
âWatch.â Min-Jun stopped fighting the sea creatures off.
Opal knocked one last siren back into the sea, before she stopped fighting the rest off.
The mermaid floated on the surface of the water, and began to sing. The sirensâ song came to an abrupt halt, then hissed in the direction of the singing mermaid. Some sirens began to clutch their webbed ears, diving back into the water.
âTheyâre retreating,â Lily watched in awe, âBut why?â
âA Sirenâs voice is beautiful, yes, it puts men into a hypnotic trance. Their songs are used for hunting, and have malintent for those who are misfortunate enough to fall victim to it. A mermaidâs voice has different purposes for different things. And a single mermaidâs song is far more complex and superior than a whole pod of sirens singing.â The Captain explained.
The mermaid continued to sing, scaring off the few remaining sirens, then swam to the ship.
Opal caught Quinn before he could collapse, whispering for a moment in concern before helping him to the infirmary, his ears had traces of blood. Sirius was one of the first to break free of the sirenâs spell.
Min-Jun left the young pirates to mourn their sunken ship. Sirius didnât seem too sad to see it go. James, on the other hand, wasnât taking it well.
âNow how are we going to get off this bloody ship?â James lamented.
Sirius sighed. âIf you find a way, just go without me,â he holds up his wrist, âIâd really like to not have another near-death experience thank you.â
âIâm actually surprised you didnât die,â Remus said from behind the pirates. His arms were crossed. âI was hoping you would.â
âAnd here I thought youâd actually prefer me alive to get your bracelet off of me.â Sirius held out his left hand. âPlease, get it off.â
âNow what made you think that?â Remus tilted his head, then lowered his arms as he walked over to the pirate. âBut, since you actually behaved, Iâll take him back.â
âYouâre supposed to pry information off of me arenât you? Iâm no use to you as a corpse.â Sirius retorted. âWhere have you been anyway?â
Remus decided not to answer, frankly not in the mood to argue.
He reached out and took hold of the pirate's left wrist once again, clasping his hand and gripping his forearm with the other. DĂși hÇi, slithered over from Siriusâ wrist hand, and back onto Remusâ hand. Coiling and becoming inanimate once more. Its emerald eyes gleaming in what might have been the equivalent of happiness.
âFunny, I didn't think you particularly cared.â Remus comments with a small smile, âIâve been busy.â
James, Lily, Alice, Frank, Marlene, and Dorcas all stared at the moving snake.
âWHAT IS THAT THING?!â They shouted.
âItâs a Spirit Sword.â Sirius and Remus both said in exasperation.
đ§đ»ââïž Hello! Welcome to chapter five! Please please please give a like and follow to my co-author and best friend Luna ( @epithymiahua ) because this story would not be where itâs at without her help! Sheâs incredible and deserves so much credit for working on this alongside me cause she works so hard. And I feel horrible that she isnât getting the credit deserves. Just a small reminder that the next chapter will be posted on Lunaâs blog!Â
This chapter features a mention of poisoning, itâs quite brief and only about paragraph but nonetheless hereâs your warning. Also, if you have any questions about swords and the reasoning behind Min-Junâs sword having a name, feel free to ask Luna on her blog, she is great at explaining the lore behind it all and very patient to help you understand.Â
As always, a reminder that there is some lore included within this, however, it will be explained over time so no worries. There are very subtle mentions of lore within the previous chapters so perhaps read back and see if you can catch it.Â
Under the guise of Fantastic Nautical Creatures by Newt Scamander, the included lore on different types of merfolk will as always, be taken from the book âThe Secret World of Mermaidsâ by Francine Rose. We will not take credit for its writing. Itâs a childhood book of mine that I adore dearly and sincerely think you should all check out!
Also! Please let me know if you want to be added to the tag list so that you donât miss a new chapter! Anyways, thatâs about it. I hope you enjoy!

Chapter 5: The Sea Serpentâs Venom
Everything happened in a span of mere seconds. Regulus and Tadase both woke up in fear, the crew claimed their weapons, the boys were pulled away by Opal and hidden away, Remus drew his sword, Siriusâ sword clanged against his, and the invading pirates boarded the Dragonâs Pearl.Â
Remus glared at the offending man, he stepped back when other pirates began to draw closer. One of the pirates stood next to Sirius Black. He was lean and tall, he wore round spectacles, light skin, the most unruly black hair Remus had ever seen, and a sword at the ready.Â
Remus blocked the first to his head, retaliating by swinging his sword. The pirate in spectacles charged at Quinn, who only smirked in response. Easily dancing around the younger pirate, disarming him rather quickly by grabbing the spectacles of the pirate. The man yelled out in surprise, shouting at the unfairness of it all.Â
Another pirate, this time a woman with bright green eyes and fiery red hair, charged after Opal. Having just joined the fray, she quickly blocked a blow to her side. She was not amused, nor did she want to deal with practical children, minus Remus of course, trying to steal their ship.
âWhere is he?!â Sirius snarled out, his sword pressed against Remusâ.
âI donât know who youâre talking about.â He snapped in return. Pushing his sword down against the Black.
âDonât play coy, I know your captain kidnapped my brother!â Sirius pulled his sword free and twirled it with his wrist.
âKidnapped?! My captain practically saved him!â Remus widened his stance, putting the hilt of his sword to his chest.
Sirius didnât even bother to respond to that, only frowning at the answer Remus gave him. He surged forward again, aiming for Remusâ torso. He blocked and began to advance while Sirius began to retreat to the stairs. He was heading for the Captainâs quarters. In a moment of quick thinking, Remus threw his sword. Sirius found himself pinned to the wall- Remusâ sword piercing his sleeve to the wood of the railing.
Sirius tugged his wrist, trying to pull free, he glared at Remus who only offered a smirk in return. His expression falters at the sight of a young lanky man with dusty blonde hair and grey eyes. The young manâs eyes darted around nervously, he quickly ran towards Sirius, handing the object in his arms to him.Â
It was Min-Junâs sword, the one with a dark green sheath with gold accents. DĂș hÇi. Remus paled. The lanky boy had snuck into the Captainâs quarters. Sirius smirked, taking the hilt of the sword.
The crew of the Dragonâs Pearl paused, watching Sirius. With all of the attention on him, Sirius spoke.Â
âIâll be taking over this ship, unless you hand over Regulus Black. If you donât, Iâll have the Dragonâs Pearl kill you all.â The crew merely looked at the Black in confusion. Â
Sirius frowns, he lifts the sword up for the crew to see. âSee this! This sword controls the ship, and I hold the sword.âÂ
Remus looked to Quinn, an intense desire to wring the young Blackâs neck was clear upon his face. Quinn merely shook his head, sheathing his sword, and leaned against the railing. Remus only looked at Sirius as if he was watching a child wave a stick and calling it a magic wand. Â
Siriusâ brows frowned further into frustration at the lack of a response from the crew, in anger, he pulls the sword from its sheath. Instantly dropping the sword, blood dripping to the deck. Sirius clutched his hand tightly, a tiny metallic gold snake with emerald eyes wrapped its body around Siriusâ wrist, its fangs piercing the skin.Â
The metallic gold snake released its fangs, leaving two puncture holes, uncoiling its body, and it fell to the floor. Then slithered its way to the hilt of the sword where it fits perfectly to the deep grooves of the metal hilt that had appeared to have lost a large piece. The snake froze and became inanimate once more. Its emerald eyes shimmering.Â
Sirius looked to Remus and Quinn. His vision began to fog up around the edges, his mind felt heavy. âWhat did you do to me? What is that sword?!â
âUs? Weâve done nothing.â Quinn replied with a shrug.
Remus sheathed his sword and walked forward. His expression was neutral as the crew began to drive out the remaining pirates who had grown in fear at the sight of the swordâs snake coming to life. âThat sword, is called DĂș hÇi.âÂ
Sirius fell to his knees, he looked up to Remus. âWhat the bloody hell does that have to do with anything?!âÂ
Remus remains passive. âDĂș hÇi translates to Venomous Sea.â He crouched down next to the pirate. âYou were bitten by the spirit of the sword, and now have its venom running in your veins.âÂ
The pirate glared at Remus. âGive me the antidote!âÂ
âI donât have it, only the White Sea Serpent has it,â Remus answered calmly. Â
Sirius froze, he had heard that title before. The White Sea Serpent was a man who had vanquished many pirates and had a magical sword that only served one master. âWho is he?! Where can I find him to give me the antidote!?âÂ
âHeâs my captain,â Remus smirked. âCaptain Min-Jun Hua. And I doubt he would give someone like you the antidote. He doesnât take too kindly to trespassers on his ship.â Â
Sirius struggled to keep his eyes open, his heart began to slow, he fell to his side. Quinn walked forward.Â
âYou got bitten by the White Sea Serpent mate. Youâll become legendary if you survive. Which you wonât since its venom is hell without the antidote.â He leans down to grin at the pirate. âYouâd best start praying my captain returns soon, eh?â Â
Sirius couldnât respond, he fell unconscious. Quinn tsks, shaking his head. He stood, âTake him to the infirmary, make sure he stays alive long enough for Min-Jun to arrive.âÂ
The crew gets to work. Remus watches them drag Sirius away, his arms crossed. âDefeated by the captainâs sword when the captain was nowhere in sight. What a terrible way to die. He doesnât even have the honor to die with the captain present. How tragic.âÂ
âWell, now you know how it looks in person. This is why no one has managed to take the ship.â Quinn adds, he grabs the fallen sword, speaking quietly to it. A small hiss answers in return, Quinn resheaths the sword. Â
âIâll go check on the children. They got quite the scare.â Remus offered. He personally wanted to make sure the children werenât harmed during the fight.Â
âAlright, try to get some sleep,â Quinn adds as he looks to the ship that was sailing away. âHis own crew left him, not that I blame them. They wouldnât even be able to help him.â Quinn turned to the infirmary. DĂș hÇi in his hand.Â
When Remus joined the children, Brielle had taken to hiding Regulus as well. She snarled when the cabin door opened, but stopped when she saw that it was Remus.Â
âHow are they?â Remus asked softly, kneeling on the ground. The mermaid had not spoken once, but it was clear she could understand them. The mermaid only communicated with Remus telepathically, but even then Remus still struggled to understand the complex mer language.Â
Brielle simply looked to her right, the children were huddled under a blanket. She looked back to Remus, her eyes turning silver as she spoke to Remus telepathically.
Remus instantly raised his hands to try to stop her, his head shaking. âAlright, I understand. Please stop doing that, it feels so loud my head might burst.â He looks to Brielle whoâs shoulders slumped. He sighs. âAt least until I know about your language.âÂ
Brielle looks away, her hair falling over her shoulder. Remus turned his attention to the blanket, lifting it up a tad to peek at the children underneath. Two pairs of wide eyes stared back at him. Remus couldnât help but smile.Â
âAre you both alright?â The boys nod. Tadase crawls out from the blanket, curling up to the older merâs side. Purring contentedly. Regulus crawled out as well, hesitantly watching the two mers interact, it looked like he wanted comfort too. Â
Without warning, Remus pulled Regulus onto his lap, hugging him tightly. Regulus struggled to pull himself free, but gradually came to a stop. The childâs shoulders began to shake, before he began to sob.Â
Remus only rubbed his back in an attempt to soothe him. A sigh leaving his lips, he was angry. Regulus had been so small and thin, he hadnât spoken a single word for nearly all four days. Only flinching whenever someone mentioned the Blacks. What had they done to him?
âHe feels abandoned.â Remus snapped his head up, eyes wide as he looked to the mermaid. She had spoken. In english!
Brielle looked undisturbed with her sudden ability to speak. She watched the boy closely. âI feel, loneliness from him. He feels abandoned.âÂ
Remus frowned. He wasnât surprised. The Blacks all but unloved the frail boy in his arms. Regulus was neglected for so long, it must have felt like rejection and abandonment. Brielle tilts her head, the mer child in her arms has fallen asleep. Gently, she places Tadase down beside her. She turns to Remus, her arms stretched, reaching for Regulus.Â
âIâll sing. To help him sleep. No more nightmares.âÂ
Remusâ eyes widened in surprise. âMermaidâs can be rid of nightmares?âÂ
Brielle nodded. âMothers do, for their babies. I will do it for him.â She pulls the boy into her arms, her clawed hands were so gentle, it amazed Remus how such a fierce creature could become so gentle and tender to others. He had much to learn about his fellow mers it seemed.Â
Once settled comfortably upon her lap, Brielle began to sing. And her lullaby soothed out the frown on his face, falling deep into sleep. Tadase curled closer to her. Her lullaby seemed to calm the rage within Remusâ own mind, and all the crew slept well for the first time in days. Even Sirius Black who was fighting for his life, the pain seemed to dull.Â
Her song reached everyone aboard the Dragonâs Pearl.
Welcome to Chapter 6! I would like to say a special thank you to my best friend and co-author Olivia ( @asunshinepuffâ ) for inviting me to work on this story with her. As you may have noticed, we have decided to change on how we release the chapters of our story. We will be alternating from my blog to @asunshinepuffââs blog.Â
These chapters contain many original characters created by Olivia and myself. All credit for our creations goes to each other for our respective characters because we have both worked so hard to bring these character to life and I would never dare to take credit for any of Oliviaâs characters.Â
As always there is mermaid lore hidden within the storyline. The included lore on different types of merfolk will be taken from the book âThe Secret World of Mermaidsâ by Francine Rose. We are taking no credit for her work. The different types of mermaids will be explained later so donât worry. We have also taken the liberty of creating some of own original types of merfolk.
Now without further adieu!
Chapter 6: The Return of the White Sea Serpent
Min-Jun glared at the sleeping form of Sirius Black. He had returned to the ship in the dead of night, Quinn, Opal and Remus all quickly rushed to explain what had occurred earlier that night. And now, they waited for the Captainâs Verdict.Â
âLetâs just throw him overboard.â Remus suggests simply. His arms were crossed as he glared at the unconscious man.Â
âTo throw him overboard would require him to be alive, Remus.â Min-Jun spoke. Â
âHe doesnât have to be.â Remus smiled.Â
Min-Jun shook his head in amusement with his young ward. He looked back to Sirius.Â
âNo, he came looking for his young brother.â He stood from his seat, looking to Remus and Quinn. âI will give him the antidote, I wish to question him. He may be the key to finally be rid of those Black Pirates.â Â
âI agree.â Quinn replied with a curt nod. âWe should keep an eye on him though, if he came here solely for Regulus, he might attempt to kidnap his brother himself.â He continued, leaning against the wooden wall of the infirmary.
âTha Ătan anĂłito na apagĂĄgei ton aderfĂł tou.â Would be foolish to abduct his brother. Opal mumbled under her breath, prompting Quinn to give her a look with raised eyebrows. Really?
âAnd that task falls to you, Remus.â Min-Jun looked at the younger man. âHe will be under your care. Do your best not to strangle him.â Without another word, the Captain reached into his coat, pulling a small thin vial from his pocket. He pried Siriusâ jaw open, poured the contents into his mouth, and rubbed his neck to force Sirius to swallow.Â
âIt will take some time before it starts taking effect. He should be fine at noon later today.â Â
With nothing else left to say, the captain left them to it.Â
Remus was not happy with being on babysitting duty. He didnât mind watching Regulus and Tadase because they were actual children, not an annoying over egotistical adult. Tadase and Regulus were sweet boys, Sirius just made Remus want to smash his face with a hammer. So in order to calm himself, Remus went in search of the boys because they always somehow managed to calm him down.Â
âYour brother is here Regulus,â Remus spoke softly. Tadase rested in his lap, playing with the tassel on the hilt of his sword. Remus looked at Regulus, the boy tensed up.Â
â...â Regulus lowered his head down, avoiding Remusâ eyes. Â
âDo you want to see-â
âNO!â Regulus shouted. Tadase startled, covering his ears at the older childâs scream.
Remus gawked back at the boy, frowning lightly. âRegulus, donât shout. You startled Tadase.âÂ
Chastised, Regulus looked down to his lap. Remus sighed softly pausing for a brief moment, âAlright, if he asks to see you, Iâll keep him away.â
âHe knows Iâm here?â Regulusâ eyes widen like discs. Â
âHe came here for you.â Remus replied with a nod.
â...why?â Regulus frowned as if he had eaten something sour.Â
âBecause he loves you.â
Regulus snapped his head to Brielle, Remus also looked to the older mermaid, she was sitting on a chair, her lessons in walking were slow but steady. Her black hair had been tied into a braid by Opal, she wore a simple flowy blue dress, her feet were covered in flats with lace tied around her ankles. Her dark eyes watched Regulusâ stormy blue ones.Â
âNo he doesnât,â Regulus glared, âHe left me aloneâŠâÂ
Brielle tilted her head, her eyes shifted to silver. âSometimes, people have to leave⊠but they come back. And he does love you.â Â
âHow do you know? You never even met him.â Brielle smiled, as if she knew a secret Regulus didnât. She montined her hand for Regulus to come closer. âI do know, do you want to know how?âÂ
Regulus eyed her skeptically, eventually the young boy nodded his head. He walked over to the mermaid. She easily lifted the boy to her lap. Her silver eyes only seemed to intensify. Slowly, her clawed hands inched toward the sides of his face.Â
âBecause Sirius and I are the same.âÂ
Regulus frowned. âNo, you're nice, Sirius is mean.âÂ
Brielle shook her, gently she pulled Regulusâ head to her chest, âListen.â
Regulus was confused for a moment before he heard the tell tale sound of a heart beat. âYour heart?âÂ
Brielle smiled, gently pulling him back to look at his eyes. âSirius and I, share the same heart.âÂ
Regulus frowned, âI donât understand.âÂ
Brielle only smiled, âWe love the same. We are first borns, and we love our younger siblings fiercely.â
âNo, he left me!âÂ
âI leave Tadase to hunt, our mother was not kind, our father was killed by our mother. Tadase had no mother, so I became what he needed.â She rubbed Regulusâ head gently. âSirius is young, very young, he could not raise you yet, so he left. But his heart never left you.â Â
âWhy did he leave me?â Regulusâ eyes began to water.Â
Brielle pulled him into another hug. âBecause sometimes, older siblings are not strong enough to protect their siblings, Sirius knew this. So he left to get stronger, so he could come back for you and raise you. Because he loves you.âÂ
Regulus wasnât entirely convinced. â... But how do you know?âÂ
âBecause I did the very same.â Regulus pulled back, his face angry. âWhy?! Why did you leave Tadase?!âÂ
âOur mother is powerful, and I was still too young, but I came back. Because if I didnât he would not survive. Our mother does not love us.â Brielle responded patiently.Â
âWhy did your mama not love you?â He questioned.
âMaybe because mother and father were different species, maybe because we looked like our father more. I do not know.â Â
Regulus looked down, biting his lip. âThat sounds like Mama⊠and PapaâŠthey donât like Sirius⊠or meâŠâ He rubbed his eyes, sobbing as he looked up to the mermaid. âWhy, why do they not love us?âÂ
Brielleâs gaze only softened. âSome cannot love, but Sirius and I, we have so much love to give to our brothers,â She paused, brushing his hair back, âTadase forgave me, and he is safe in my love,â she tilted Regulusâ chin up, âForgive your brother, and you will feel just how much love he has to give. He will never leave you again.âÂ
Regulus wailed, his shoulder shook as he sobbed harshly, Brielle simply rubbed his back as she sang her lullaby for the boys.Â
Remus watched in silent study. He knew mermaids were in tune with the emotions of others. And if what Brielle said was true, then perhaps there was more to Sirius Black than being a complete idiot. After listening to the lullaby for a few minutes, Remus left the boys with Brielle as he went back to check on Sirius, only to find the raging idiot shouting at the crew demanding for his brother.Â
Sirius somehow had gotten a hold of a sword and was holding one of the crew hostage. âI want to see Regulus!â His skin had returned to a healthy pale tone, his eyes were focused and his strength clearly returned.Â
Remus felt a headache coming on. A big one. He sighs, âIf you think holding one of my crewmates hostage is a good tact to see your brother, you are a bigger fool than I thought.â
Sirius glared. âYou, who do you think you are keeping my brother away from me?âÂ
âWho do I think I am? Someone who cares about your brother despite only knowing the boy for nearly a week.â He simply retorts.
âOh like I am supposed to believe that. The Blacks have been chased after by the navy for years, you really think Iâm going to believe youâre not holding him for leverage, or for a reward?â Sirius glared. Â
Remus glared in return, âYou should be thankful youâre even alive. That poison is fast acting. Iâd mind your words.â
Sirius gave a humorless laugh, âOh like Iâd expect you to understand. I would travel to the pits of hell for him.â He pressed the blade closer to the crew manâs neck. âWhere is he?âÂ
Before Remus could retort, a melodious song reached their ears. The crew men's eyes began to droop, falling into a trance.Â
Quinn stumbled, his hand reaching for the railing to keep himself upright, Opal slowly lowered to the ground, Siriusâ grip on the dagger loosened, falling to the deck.Â
Remus blinked in confusion, he turned to the source of the song and saw Brielle standing on deck, holding onto the wall to steady herself, she was singing everyone to sleep.Â
Sirius collapsed, Quinn fell unconscious. Opal layed down and fell asleep on a bag of rice. Brielle walked closer to Remus, who remained unaffected since he was a mer as well. Â
Min-Jun walked towards him, glaring at Brielle. âCould you not?âÂ
Brielle eyed Min-Jun in puzzlement, but did stop her song. Min-Jun walked to Sirius. Remus only watched Min-Jun in bewilderment.Â
Why hadnât the song affected The Captain of the Dragonâs Pearl?

Chapter 3: A Sea of Fireworks
Three years passed as The Dragonâs Pearl sailed the seven seas. There had been many fierce battles and grand adventures as Remus learned the ways of the sword from both Captain Hua and First mate Sandoval. During the past few years, Remus found a particular fondness for literature that grew further than when he was younger. Along the way, there have been many new companions to join the shipmates, and the secrets of a certain young man were revealed. A year on his own at sea taught Remus many things, but he couldnât help but miss the company of those upon The Dragonsâ Pearl.Â
Now at seventeen summers old, the once young boy has grown into a fine young man.Â
Under the sea, there was a mythical creature with bright shimmering amber scales, varying in shades of accent tones from the top of his tail, to his fluke. The moonlight breached the surface of the darkened sea, the light reflected off of his amber eyes, as if they began to shine and glow under the moonâs pale beauty. His medium length tawny colored hair flowed around him in the cool waters. The mer turned down before his arms moved forwards as he dived down deeper into the sea. The deeper he went, the darker it became.Â
As he reached the seafloor, he swam at a leisurely pace, brushing a clawed hand against the seagrass. Looking up, the seagrass became littered with life, crabs, small, fish, seahorses, an octopus, and coral. He chuckled to himself as the fish scattered when he swam near them, a green sea turtle by his side seemed to follow him, wherever he went. It had felt too long since he had last been in the sea.Â
Remusâ head turned sharply upwards as he picked up the sound of a muffled screeching noise coming from the surface. Then a muted bang before a flash of scattered gold light. With a strong flick of his tail, the floor beneath him vanished from sight as he neared the surface.Â
Breaching from the water, he looks up to the familiar ship with concern, âOpal! Whatâs happening?!â He yells up to the deck.Â
In an instant, a tall beautiful greek woman, around the age of twenty-three, with long light brown hair, hazel green eyes, lightly tanned skin peered over the railing of the deck to respond. She was dressed in a sea-blue off the shoulder long-sleeved shirt that was tucked into her light brown pants, with a black corset vest on top, and black boots. At her hip was a wide sword with a dark blue sheath, and its hilt had the detailing of a trident.Â
âMin-Jun received a letter! We have to make port in Portland! The Blacks and Greyback were spotted off the coast of Dorset!â She lowers the rope ladder and opens the small gate, âGet your tail up here!â
Remus catches the ladder with ease and pulls himself up onto it, âWhatâs the sudden hurry? Weâre currently off the coast of Dorset ourselves.â He comments, looking back up to his friend.Â
âQuinnâs family lives in Portland, he thinks theyâll be going after them!â Opal replies, tossing down a blanket for Remus to dry his scales with.
Remus winces as the blanket lands upon his head, frowning as it blocks his view. Pulling the soft cloth from his head, he sets to work on drying himself and his scales, âBut why would they go after his family?â He yells out.Â
Opal pauses, a somber look upon her face as she watches Remus make his way up the rope ladder with his two legs, scales now nowhere to be seen. She shakes her head as he reaches the deck, âI donât know. But I think somethingâs wrong.â
Two-quarters of an hour pass with The Dragonâs Pearl sailing at full speed to Portland. The sea seemed to be at their side that night, the sound of cannon fire reached the members of the crew. The lifeboats were lowered with First mate Sandoval and Remus inside one of the boats.Â
Remusâ eyes widened when he saw the pitch-black sails of The Ophiuchus which could barely be seen from a distance. The shipâs colors had a black flag with a white skull with a snake coming out of an eye socket. The Blacks. The ancient pirate ship passed down from generation to generation of Blacks. Rumors and tales continuously traveled from sailors aboard many ships about the family, the ship gaining the nickname of Grimmauld amongst the gossiping sailors. Remus had heard many tales himself in the past.Â
The Blacks were ruthless in their pliage for gold, leaving no survivors. There were tales of The Ophiuchus battling The Dragonâs Pearl when Captain Orion Black attempted to steal the other Captainâs ship. Although Captain Hua was young, he forced the Blacks to flee when their ship suffered too much damage. The Captain of The Dragonâs Pearl had given them a warning years ago that should he ever see them again, he would kill the Captain of The Ophiuchus.
The boats reached the docks before everyone ran up to the small town of Portland. Quinn cut down any pirate who foolishly stood in his way. Remus followed close behind, sword drawn at the ready, and cut down any pirate who tried to go after Quinn whilst the manâs back was turned. Remus had grown used to the occasional battle, but hardly ever were the stakes this high. Opal and Captain Hua had stayed on the ship with a skeleton crew, while the other sailors joined Remus and Quinn to shore.Â
Remus stopped in his tracks when one of the pirates was running straight for him. With the sword in his hand, Remus quickly stabbed the pirate in the abdomen before pulling his sword free and running to catch up with Quinn. Who was running up a hill towards the Lighthouse faster than Remus had ever seen the man move.Â
Up close the lighthouse was rather beautiful for its old age, time had been kind to it, yet the years have clearly made their marks all throughout the house. The lighthouse more than likely had many stories to tell. Standing tall with red and white patterns, a small quaint cottage at the base of the lighthouse became visible as Remus neared the property. The house was alight with shadows dancing across the windows as pirates breached the door, the sound of clanging swords could be heard coming from inside the house. Quinn cut down pirates until he finally managed to enter the house.Â
Quinnâs eyes widened as he surveyed the state of the house, there were countless pirates from both the Blackâs and Greybackâs sailors engaged in sword fights. There was hardly a break as he entered the fray of battle, cutting down unsuspecting men from behind and never letting his guard down.
A middle-aged woman with black hair tied into a messy bun, bright brown eyes, fair skin, and rosy lips gripped the rapier in her hand tightly as she slashed down another pirate. She twirled expertly, her white nightgown and dark robe twirling with her, to dodge a blow from another pirate before she stabs them, she pulls the sword free before she raises it to the man who just entered the cottage, freezing as her eyes widen in surprise. âQuinn!â She exclaimed before her eyes darted to a pirate behind him who began to stir awake.Â
He smiles at the exclamation before following her line of sight, turning behind him he sees the pirate that began to stir awake. Flipping the hilt of his sword in hand, he stabs the newly conscious pirate in the chest before turning back to the woman, âMother are you alright?â He looked over the cottage, objects just laying scatter on the floor before he looked back to his mother.Â
âIâm perfectly alright, itâs your father Iâm worried about, that blasted Greyback cornered him to the basement!â The woman turned her gaze to the young man who just reached the door, quickly assessing him before offering him a small nod. âAnd you must be Remus.â Â
Remus nods in return, âI am. How did you-â He cuts himself off as the answer was obvious and gives his First mate a pointed look, âQuinn. Youâve told them about me havenât you?â
âRemus. Who do you take me for? Of course, I did.â Quinn mirrors the same pointed look back, âHow else do you think Min-Jun and I were able to help you as a child?â He looks back to his mother, âWe better move quickly. Hopefully, father is using the basement to his advantage.â
âQuinn, this is your father, of course, he is.â The woman turns to a door that leads to a staircase to the basement. Quickly lifting her skirt the woman rushed down the stairs.Â
The three rush down the stairs and into the large dimly lit basement, which could only be described as a very large study with storage. Bookshelves lined the walls and the shelves themselves were stacked with a variety of mythical things one would only believe to be within the tales. Color bottles and vials littered the shelves of the room, various plants were in every corner of the room. In the center of the basement, a large man with a cutlass scoured the room with a harsh glare for the man who was hiding.Â
The man wielding the cutlass was large, nearly the height of Min-Jun and Quinn, he had a vicious looking face, with very long matted grey hair in dreads, a scar going across his right eye, the iris pale compared to its twin which was pitch black. His left ear had a gold hoop earring, his teeth were visible as he sneered at others who interrupted his dual.Â
Remusâ eyes could only widen as he looked upon the large man, his breathing quickening and grip tightening on his sword. Every part of him grew defensive and fearful, his instincts screaming at him to get out. To run. Heâs heard of this man before, Fenrir Greyback, a notorious and ruthless hunter of mers alike, capturing and selling mers for profit, or simply to just experiment on them. Other times heâd simply slaughter any merfolk he could find.
Greybackâs knuckles looked raw and battered with blood as he gripped his weapon tightly, his long yellowish nails were easily spotted as his right hand pressed against his chest, a wound with fresh blood seeping through his grey shirt. âThis isnât over.â He snarled before he ran out the basement door.Â
Hidden behind a bookcase, was a middle-aged man with tousled red-brown hair with long bangs parted to the left, light-colored skin, and blue eyes. He wore a simple navy blue shirt underneath a grey robe, light brown pants, and dark brown boots. Eyes trained as he watched the burly man closely, sword drawn at the ready to continue the duel. He made no motion to move as Greyback snarled in warning, back pressed flush against the wood until he could hear the pounding footsteps a safe distance away.Â
Relaxing marginally, he exits his retreat behind the bookcase and sighs, âThat man is repulsive.â He mutters under his breath.
âYouâre not wrong about that father.â Quinn chuckles as he gently pats his fatherâs shoulder.Â
âWhy would Greyback come all the way out here? Why would he attack you?â Remus looked at the older man.
âProbably because my husband has something he wants.â The older woman looks to her husband. âAre you alright?â Â
The older man looks to his wife and nods, âIâm alright. If anything Greybackâs in much worse shape. That wound is going to leave quite a scar if untreated.â
âWhat was he after?â Remus looked between the older couple.Â
âSomething no one should know exists.â The woman looked around the room. Muttering under her breath at the state of the room. âBut rumors are a powerful thing, especially when they hold truths.âÂ
âAnd especially if it makes you incredibly well known in the nautical world.â The man continued with a sigh. Moving aside his robe, he pulls free a rather thick leather book from an inner pocket and looks down at it. âHeâd be a fool to think Iâd just leave it lying about.â
Remusâ eyes looked over the leather book. At first glance, it was nothing out of the ordinary, but Remus knew better than to judge a book by its cover. It was whatâs inside the book that Greyback took a slash to the chest in order to obtain. And failed. Whatever information that was contained inside the book was important. Why else would such a siege upon this small home occur? Enough to bring both Greyback and the Blacks themselves here.Â
âThis book is the only one in existence.â The woman looked at Remus as she stood beside her husband. âItâs about your kind.â Gently taking the book from her husbandsâ hands, she holds the book to Remus. âMy husband wrote everything he learned about the magical creatures of the sea.â She smiles as she encourages Remus to take the book.Â
âAbout my kindâŠâ He repeats at a whisper before a realization comes to mind, amber eyes widening at the thought, âThatâs why he wanted the book. To hunt more merfolk.â A cold shudder runs down his spine at the thought of Greyback getting his hands upon this book. No wonder the older man fought to protect it with his life. Mers alike would be in even more danger than in the past. And after seeing the man in person, Remus felt as though the rumors didnât give any accurate insight as to how gruesome the pirate actually appeared, and the snarling tone of his voice would most likely echo in his mind for days.Â
At the older manâs nod in confirmation, he looked back at him. âHow long have you been working on this?â Remus asked as he took the book, with careful hands.
âMany years. I was a bit younger than you when I first started writing the beginning pages.â
Remus looks down to the worn leather book and opens to a well-kept page, Fantastic Nautical Creatures, by Newt Scamander. Remusâ eyes widen at the title and familiar name, pausing mid-turn of a page. Wait. Remus looks at Quinn with wide eyes, before he looks back to the older couple.Â
âYouâre Newt Scamander,â He looks to the woman, âAnd youâre Porpetina Scamander!âÂ
âPlease, call me Tina dear.â She rubs Remusâ arm in a comforting manner.Â
Remus looks to Quinn, an unreadable expression upon his face. Quinn had called them mother and father. That means⊠âYouâre their son?!âÂ
âQuinton Scamander is my real name,â Quinn answered with a simple shrug. âSandoval was the first thing I could come up with when you asked for my name. Iâm not exactly used to keeping an alias.â He looks at his parents. âWhy couldnât you have just kept it at Quinn?âÂ
âAnd leave the Scamander tradition of giving horrible names? I couldnât possibly.â Tina chuckled.
âOh, you wound me, mother. What a way to keep tradition.â Quinn replies with a wince.Â
âItâs not like my family did any better.â Tina retorts just as the sound of cannon fire boomed, echoing throughout the basement. Tensing, everyone turned their heads to the back door, and with a nod from Newt, they exited the damaged basement and headed to the cliffs.
As the group ran back towards the shoreline, Remus could see The Dragonâs Pearl exchanging cannon fire with The Ophiuchus. The ships both suffered blows from the other, only the Dragonâs Pearl wasnât on fire. And what appeared to be Min-Jun, swinging on a rope, from the Ophiuchus back to the Dragonâs Pearl.
Quinn only groaned at the sight. âAnd he gives me lectures about swinging from a rope.â Hypocrite. âWhy are you like thisâŠâ He mumbled under his breath.
Tina and Newt only chuckled as their son scowled at the captain. They ran to the docks just as the Ophiuchus began to make their retreat, and the Dragonâs Pearl making its way to the loading docks. Opal was the first rush down to welcome Quinn and Remus back.Â
âTo shorten it: Min-Jun snuck onto Greybackâs ship and found two gorgĂłnes. Mermaids. Brought them back to The Dragonâs Pearl, then snuck onto the Ophiuchus, rescued the second Black heir and brought him back as well.â Opal said with a shake of her head, âHow that was possible, I have no idea.âÂ
âSounds about right,â Newt replied with a chuckle.
The older couple looked at their son, who had never told them he learned and spoke greek. Newt and Tina looked at each other before sharing a knowing smile. Tina looked to the woman with the greek accent. âIâm Tina Scamander, Quinnâs mother. I wonder why my dear son would fail to mention a lovely lady such as yourself in his letters?â She turns her head slowly to glare at Quinn, who found the sea far more interesting at the moment. Tina looked back to the young woman. âWhat is your name dear?âÂ
Opal watched Quinnâs gaze quickly turn to the sea in embarrassment. Oh this awkward man. She fought the urge to tease the poor man, there was time to mess with him another time. Not in front of his parents. She smiled as she looked at Tina. âOpal Teresi. Itâs nice to meet you.â
Remus looked to Quinn with a teasing smirk, âReally? You mention me in your letters but not Opal?âÂ
âShut. Up.â Quinn says with wide eyes that seemed to promise pain with an unnaturally wide smile.
âYouâll have to write to me dear, Quinn hardly ever writes whatâs going on in his life. I have to rely on Min-Jun for that.â She tsks she pats Opalâs hand affectionately. Â
âI will,â Opal replies with a nod.Â
âMay I see them?â Newt asks the young woman. âThe mermaids.âÂ
The young woman pauses for a moment and looks to Newt, âTheyâre terrified, so please. If thereâs any way you could help.â
âMaybe I can get them to calm down?â Remus suggests looking to Opal and Newt.Â
âThat may be for the best.â Opal agrees, âWe better hurry, Min-Jun wants to leave as soon as possible. Before the Blacks notice their son is missing.â Â
Opal leads the group to the cabins, walking past many doors until they finally stop at one door with a circular window. Remus peered inside and froze when a pair of glaring eyes locked to his. Inside the room, there was a tall beautiful Asian woman with wet long dark brown hair, brown eyes, fair skin, and bright red lips. She looked to be about Opalâs age. Her tail was a dazzling array of soft blue scales that looked like misshapen spots, with white scales as the base, her fluke was nearly a translucent shimmery white. Her skin was pale, her arms were wrapped tightly around the smaller mer. Her tail coiled around them protectively. Remus nearly gasped. The mermaid only clutched the child tighter, her glare never leaving Remusâ face.
The mer in her arms was tiny. A child, who couldnât have been older than four. The mer child had short soft silky black hair that was in disarray, brown eyes, light sun-kissed skin. The child clung tightly to the older mermaid's neck, their tail had pale teal and shimmery white scales with the same patterns as the older mermaid, safely tucked under her arms. The mer childâs shoulders were shaking, pearls littered the blankets beneath them. Tears. They sat alone in the room, laying on top of a few spare blankets for the cabin beds.
Remusâ gaze was pulled away at the sound of running footsteps, a sailor running past them in haste, to the infirmary. On impulse, Remus followed the sailor as they walked through the door.Â
There Min-Jun sat on a chair, looming over a deathly still figure, his face pale. Min-Jun was holding the still figureâs hand.Â
Remus gulped, scared to find out who the figure was. âWhoâŠâÂ
Min-Jun looked up to see Remus. With pained eyes he looked back down to the figure. Gently putting the cold hand to rest on their chest.Â
Welcome to Chapter 4! I would like to say a special thank you to my best friend and co-author Olivia ( @asunshinepuffâ ) for inviting me to work on this story with her. As you may have notice, we have decided to change on how we release the chapters of our story. We will be alternating from my blog to @asunshinepuffââs blog.Â
These chapters contain many original characters created by Olivia and myself. All credit for our creations goes to each other for our respective characters because we have both work so hard to bring these characters to live and I would never dare to take credit for any of Oliviaâs characters.Â
Small warning, there is a funeral in this chapter. If you have any questions, feel free to send an ask!
As always there is mermaid lore hidden within the storyline. The included lore on different types of merfolk will be taken from the book âThe Secret World of Mermaidsâ by Francine Rose. We are taking no credit for her work. The different types of mermaids will be explained later so donât worry. We have also taken the liberty of creating some of our own original types of merfolk.Â
Now without further adieu!
Chapter 4: Honoring The Fallen
The voyage back to Swansea in West Wales was somber. The Captain hardly said anything more than a sentence. Remus would sit on a barrel next to the railing of the ship, watching the sea for hours. Quinn and Opal took over caring for the young Black Heir in the midst of taking over some of the Captainâs duties whilst Min-Jun was focused on preparations and work.Â
Newt and Tina took it upon themselves to care for the two mers, to try to calm them down. There was some progress, but the older mermaid refused to part with the younger mer child.Â
It took all of two days, the Dragonâs Pearl made port, and Min-Jun ordered the crew to finish the preparations before he left the ship in First Mate Scamanderâs command. Normally the trip back home would bring Remus a strange sense of nostalgia, but now he felt only dread.Â
He watched Min-Jun, dressed in a white coat with black pants and boots, walk down the loading dock. A heavily pregnant woman wearing a brown dress with her hair tied into a bun walked towards him with a smile.Â
âI wouldnât want to be in his shoes⊠â Opal stood beside Remus. She was dressed in a royal blue button up shirt which was tucked into her black slacks and brown boots. In addition, she wore a moonstone pendant necklace and a wide sword with a blue sheath was at her side.
Remus said nothing as he watched. The womanâs face began to pale, her head began to shake, her hand covered the pained gasp that escaped her lips. Min-Jun stood perfectly still.Â
The woman began to sob hysterically, she began to fall from despair, Min-Jun gently caught her before she could read the ground. Min-Jun spoke to the weeping woman. Quinn joined Opal and Remus.Â
âSheâs so young to be a widowâŠâ Remus spoke softly.
âHe died too youngâŠâ Was the only answer Quinn could give.Â
The Captain sat with the pregnant widow on the ground for a few more minutes before he spoke once more, the woman nodded her head in response. Slowly, Min-Jun lifted the woman to stand, gently taking her arm as he guided her aboard the ship. Opal stepped forward.Â
âWe have a gown if you would like to change.â Opal took the hand Min-Jun held, giving a small smile. Opal walked in step with the young mother-to-be who only nodded her head as Opal led her to the cabins.Â
âAre the preparations complete?â The Captain asked his First Mate.Â
âYes, we are weighing anchor now.â Quinn replied with a curt nod.
Min-Jun only nods his head in acknowledgement before he leaves to his chambers. Quinn exhales slowly, turning to carry on with the remaining tasks. Remus joined the rest of the crew in setting up the banquet.Â
The ship sailed out to sea, and just when the sun was beginning to set, they lowered the anchor, they stopped. Lanterns were lit all around the ship, gold and white streamers made of cloth hung on the masts and staircases. A life boat was placed at the center of the ship, Ethanâs body rested inside. He was cleaned, and dressed in simple white garments. He looked peaceful. Like he was only asleep.Â
Mirissa, Ethanâs widow, sat silently by her still husbandâs side. Her hair had been let loose from her bun, flowing gently on the warm summer breeze. Her grey eyes staring lovingly at his face, her fingers gently brush against his cheek. She was dressed in a white gown that matched her husbandâs. It was not a usual funeral, but she was thankful for different colors instead of the grim black.Â
Remus stood beside Opal on the left side with the crew, dressed in a black shirt, dark grey pants and dark brown boots. Replacing his treasured blue scarf around his waist was a white sash in honor of tradition. He couldnât bring himself to look away from the peaceful face of his fallen friend.Â
Opal had changed, for she was now dressed in a simple black attire consisting of a long sleeved blouse, slacks and boots. Her light brown hair was tied up in a french braid, a white ribbon interlacing the folds. In addition, she wore a moonstone pendant necklace which brought the only contrast to her outfit.
Newt and Tina stood beside each other, close to Remus and Opal. Tina was dressed in a black blouse with a black long flared skirt and black flats, her black hair was pulled up into a high bun. Newt was dressed in a dark grey coat, with a black shirt and slacks with dark brown boots as he silently watched the crew gather to begin the funeral.Â
The First Mate was dressed in a dark blue coat with gold embellishments, a black shirt, slacks and boots as he stood beside the Captain. His sword was sheathed at his side as usual, the only hint of his signature red in sight.Â
The Captain stood beside Mirissa and Quinn, in a white coat with black pants and boots. A gold sash across his waist, his sword at his side. He only looked at Ethan's pale face. A pastor walks next to the lifeboat, opposite of where the three stood, and invites everyone to gather to the funeral. Min-Jun gently prodded the pregnant woman to stand, hold her steady as she rose to her feet.
No one really paid attention, at least Remus didnât. He only listened when the pastor mentioned Ethanâs life. How he had been an orphan, and taken in by Min-Jun and Quinn. Raised on the Dragonâs Pearl, and helped save many people who were attacked by pirates. How Ethan was a vibrant and kind soul who died too soon. Leaving behind a wife and child he will never know. Remus silently cursed the Blacks.Â
After mass, the eulogy done by Captain Hua and First Mate Scamander, and a few stories shared by Quinn, Opal, and some of the crew. The funeral mass concluded to an end, yet the funeral was still not over. Without a command, four crewmen lifted the lifeboat with a pulley, ropes were tied to the hooks. Another crew member gently pushed the boat over the railing of the ship, the life boat slowly lowered to the water.Â
Captain Hua looks down to Mirissa, grabbing the bow offered to him by the pastor.Â
âItâs time.âÂ
Mirissa nods her head, wiping the tears from her cheeks quickly. Min-Jun gently guides her to the side of the ship where the lifeboat began to float away. The captain doesnât rush the young widow. No one dares. Everyone stays silent, swaying gently as the waves rocked the ship. For a moment, Mirissaâs posture changes, she takes the bow and sets her feet into position. She was ready now.Â
Quinn lights the tip of the arrow, igniting it aflame, then gives the arrow to Mirissa. She drew the arrow back, and in that moment, memories of Ethan flood her mind. His gentle words, his boisterous laugh, the way his hair could not stay neat. How his face broke into a smile when she told him she was with child. Her arms begin to waver as tears begin to fall. Her body trembles.Â
Min-Jun moves to stand behind her, gently steadying her aims. His presence calms her immensely. With a weak sob she looks back to the boat that was floating farther away. She wants to send him off with one of her brightest smiles. He loved her smile. As she pulls the string to her chest, Min-Jun helps steady her hands. She releases her breath. She releases.Â
The arrow flies gracefully across the sky. Landing on its mark. A few moments pass before the whole boat is lit aflame. Min-Jun takes the bow from her hands, stepping back to give her space. She continues to watch the boat burn. The crew lower their heads to their fallen brother.Â
Remus watches the bright flames from the boat that reflect on the surface of the dark sea. It was not fair. Â
âRemus.âÂ
Snapping out of his thoughts, Remus turned to look to the voice who called him. Newt stood beside him, watching the setting sun leave its final rays of sunlight before it sank into the horizon. He simply hands Remus a book.Â
Remus takes the book into his hands, his thumb gently brushing against the letters of Fantastic Nautical Creatures, by Newt Scamander.Â
âI want you to look after it.âÂ
Remusâ head snapped up to meet the older Scamanderâs gentle gaze. âWhat?âÂ
Newt takes a deep breath, this wasnât easy for him to do. âThat book is my lifeâs work, and people wonât stop coming after it. It does not belong to people who wish to exploit the knowledge I collected over the years. And they found me, itâs no longer safe with me anymore.âÂ
âI understand that. But why me? Why not with Quinn?â Remus frowns.Â
âQuinn is a target simply because he is my son. He knows some of the contents. But no one would know who you are, or that you have the book.â Newt smiled softly. âI know itâs a lot to ask, but I know that you will do what's right to ensure that no one gets their hands on this book. Burn it if you must.â  Â
âBut- itâs your lifeâs work?! I canât just burn it should the need call for it!â
âYes you can. I have faith in you. Even if all thatâs left is ash, all its content is in our minds. It will never truly be lost.â Newt turns his head to look at his wife. âYou can update it, Iâm sure there are many things I still havenât learned.â He looks to Quinn. His eyes become filled with sorrow. âTina and I are going into hiding. Quinn knows.â Â
Remus didnât know what to say, he understood why they were going into hiding, but he still couldnât wrap his head around the fact that Newt Scamander had asked him to guard the book. How can someone be this trusting? He has hardly known him for longâŠ.Â
Wait. That sounded familiar. It was exactly what he had thought when Quinn offered him the chance to join The Dragonâs Pearl. So Quinn gets it from Newt. This was all so sudden and too much, how could he become the bookâs guardian? Add his own updates? What had he done to gain the Scamanderâs trust this easily?
âI canât promise you anything, but Iâll do my best.â Remus gave the older Scamander a small smile.
The reception was full of merry music, there was nothing left of the banquet by the time dawn arrived. Some of the crew were passed out drunk, while others began to clean up the deck. Captain Hua had informed the crew that he would be accompanying Ethanâs wife back to the mainland, where she would return to live with her parents, and deliver the Scamanders to a temporary safe house, He would return in a few days. Quinn was left in command.
And so they waited by the mainland. Opal continued to care for the mers, Remus would join her whenever she would go to check on them. They learned that the older mermaidâs name was Brielle, after she had calmed down.Â
She was just barely beginning to trust them. The younger mer child was her brother, who Greyback mercilessly threatened to cut the childâs tail with his cutlass. The child was a boy, Tadase. And Remus could honestly say that being around the little mer child made the ache in his heart ease for a few hours at least.Â
Quinn looked after Regulus, the Blackâs second heir. Remus also went to check on the young boy who was awfully skinny, and barely responsive.Â
âWhy donât we introduce Tadase to him?â Opal suggested. âHe might perk up around someone close to his age.âÂ
âWould Brielle let us is the real question. She barely trusts us.â Quinn responded with a shake of his head. And for good reason.Â
In the end, Brielle consented to allow her tiny brother to play with Regulus who was only a few years older than Tadase. Regulus was cautious, his soft black hair and storm grey eyes contrasted strongly from his pale skin. He would always search for traps in everything. Whether or not he could eat, sleep, or play without getting into trouble.Â
Remusâ heart ached for the small boy. Regulus was slow to accept Tadaseâs easy friendship. Tadase was a soft spoken child, gentle with everything he did. It was adorable to watch Tadase shift uncomfortably in the clothes provided to him, and learning how to walk. Tadase would simply smile and try again.Â
Only on the third morning did the two boys become friends. Brielle was always watching them close by. Tadase had given Regulus his tears, blue pearls as a sign of friendship. Regulus only stared in amazement at the beautiful pearls. He wailed.Â
Tadase had been panicked at the sudden tears of the older boy, gently pulling him into an embrace. Remus wrote into Newtâs book about the blue pearls. He would ask about the color later.Â
The ship stayed motionless on the water as The Dragonâs Pearl waited for her captainâs return for three days. It was the fourth night now, since the funeral. Quinn stood in as Captain, sailing around the Bristol Channel.Â
Remus leaned on the railing as he stared at the docks on the mainland. He looked back to the deck to see the two boys sleeping on deck on top of a blanket. Regulus curled on his side while Tadase tucked to his side. Remusâ gaze softened at the sight of them. He looked back to the mainland.Â
The muffled sound of footsteps caught Remusâ attention. There was no one on deck besides a few of the crew who were eating silently, and the soft breaths of the sleeping children. Remusâ eyes narrowed. He turned around and nearly jumped back when a man landed on top of the very railing Remus had been leaning against, a rope in his hand, probably from his ship that Remus had failed to spot in the dark night.
A tall young man was dressed in a loose dark blue shirt, black trousers, and black boots. He would have thought him truly a handsome man, who had most likely left many women swooning for him. If he did not have that smirk upon his face that clearly meant trouble. Remus glared. The man had raven black hair that fell just on his neck, fair skin, and stormy blue eyes that twinkled in mirth as he smirked directly at Remus. Remus knew those eyes. He had seen them on Regulus.Â
