“Your Soul Is Not Hindu or Muslim… So Why Is Your Ego?”
“Your Soul Is Not Hindu or Muslim… So Why Is Your Ego?”
(Inspired by Dariya Sahib)
Before you were given a name, who were you?
Before someone whispered a religion into your ears…
Before you learned which festival to celebrate…
Before you discovered which prayers belonged to your family…
Who were you?
That question unsettles the mind because it reaches beneath everything borrowed.
Dariya Sahib repeatedly challenged the divisions that separated human beings—not because traditions have no value, but because he recognized that identity can quietly become a prison when mistaken for essence.
There is a profound difference between belonging to a tradition and believing you are the tradition.
The first can cultivate wisdom.
The second often cultivates separation.
The soul does not arrive carrying a passport.
It is not born speaking Sanskrit, Arabic, Hebrew, Pali, or Latin.
It does not emerge declaring allegiance to a nation, a caste, or a creed.
Those come later.
They are gifts of culture.
They are not the architecture of consciousness.
Yet somewhere between childhood and adulthood, something subtle happens.
We stop saying,
"I belong to this tradition."
And begin saying,
"This is who I am."
The shift appears harmless.
But it changes everything.
Because once identity becomes absolute, curiosity begins to disappear.
The ego loves certainty.
It loves labels because labels create boundaries.
Boundaries create groups.
Groups create opposition.
Opposition gives the ego something to defend.
The soul has no such need.
It seeks connection.
This is why the mystics often sounded universal.
Not because they rejected their own traditions.
But because they had gone deeply enough into them to discover what all authentic traditions eventually point toward—the transformation of consciousness.
Imagine drawing circles in the sand.
One circle is labeled Hindu.
Another Muslim.
Another Christian.
Another Sikh.
Another Buddhist.
Stand inside one circle and the others appear separate.
Now rise above the beach.
The circles disappear.
Only the earth remains.
Perspective changes division.
The soul lives from that higher perspective.
The ego lives inside the circles.
This explains why two people can read the same scripture and emerge with completely different hearts.
One becomes humbler.
The other becomes more arrogant.
The text did not create the difference.
The consciousness reading it did.
The ego rarely uses religion to find truth.
It often uses religion to strengthen identity.
It quietly whispers:
"Our path is superior."
"Our community is chosen."
"Our understanding is complete."
Notice the pattern.
The conversation slowly stops being about God.
It becomes about us.
And whenever "us" becomes more important than truth, the ego has entered the sanctuary.
Dariya Sahib challenged this tendency centuries ago.
He recognized that the deepest conflict was not between religions.
It was between identification and realization.
Identification asks,
"Who is right?"
Realization asks,
"Who am I beneath every label?"
The two questions lead in entirely different directions.
One seeks victory.
The other seeks understanding.
This distinction is desperately needed in the modern world.
Technology has connected humanity physically while often fragmenting it psychologically.
We know more about each other's opinions than ever before.
Yet we understand one another less.
Every disagreement quickly becomes personal.
Every label becomes permanent.
Every conversation becomes tribal.
The soul, however, cannot be reduced to a category.
It is the silent witness behind every role you play.
It watches you become a child, a student, a parent, a professional.
It remains present whether people praise you or criticize you.
It observes your beliefs changing across the years.
If it can witness all these identities come and go, how can any one of them be your deepest self?
This is where spirituality becomes liberating.
Not because it erases differences.
Differences enrich humanity.
Languages matter.
Cultures matter.
Traditions matter.
They preserve beauty, history, and wisdom.
But they become dangerous when they replace direct recognition of our shared essence.
Think of light passing through stained glass.
One window glows blue.
Another red.
Another green.
The colors differ.
The light remains one.
Arguing over the superiority of the glass while ignoring the light misses the entire purpose.
Dariya Sahib invited people to discover the light.
Not abandon the windows.
The world does not need less diversity.
It needs less attachment to superiority.
Humility becomes possible when you realize that no tradition owns the Infinite.
Every authentic spiritual path points toward a mystery larger than itself.
The finger pointing toward the moon is valuable.
But confusing the finger for the moon creates endless conflict.
Perhaps the greatest irony is this:
People claim to defend God.
Yet the Infinite has never required human protection.
What truly needs protection is our capacity to remain open, compassionate, and willing to learn.
The soul expands through encounter.
The ego contracts through comparison.
The soul asks,
"What truth can I receive from another?"
The ego asks,
"How do I prove I am right?"
One builds bridges.
The other builds walls.
Dariya Sahib understood that the Divine is not encountered by enlarging the walls of identity.
It is encountered by enlarging the heart.
When the heart becomes vast enough, labels find their proper place.
They remain meaningful.
But they no longer become weapons.
You may still call yourself Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Jewish, or by any other tradition.
But if that identity prevents you from recognizing the sacred in another human being, then it is no longer serving your soul.
It is serving your ego.
And the ego has always been far more interested in winning arguments than awakening.
The soul seeks something entirely different.
It seeks the One Presence that existed before every label was spoken—and that will remain long after every label has disappeared.
Spiritual & Practical Toolkit for Modern Souls
1. The Identity Reflection
Complete this sentence:
"Without my religion, profession, nationality, or title… who am I?"
Sit with the question rather than rushing to answer it.
2. Learn Across Traditions
Read one teaching each week from a spiritual tradition other than your own—not to compare, but to understand.
3. Practice Sacred Listening
Have one conversation with someone of a different belief without trying to convince them of anything.
Listen for shared humanity.
4. Replace Judgment with Curiosity
Whenever you disagree with someone's beliefs, first ask:
"What life experience might have shaped this perspective?"
5. Expand the Circle
Perform one act of kindness each week for someone outside your usual community or social group.
Let compassion become borderless.
6. Evening Reflection
Ask yourself:
"Did I meet people today as labels… or as living souls?"
The answer quietly reveals the direction of your spiritual growth.
