In my opinion this article was very successful in persuading me that there should be just as much of a fight for economic equality as well as systemic social equality. In this article the author, Nick Maggiulli, uses all three rhetorical appeals, logos, ethos, and pathos, to make his argument. In the beginning he uses statistics from the “Survey of Consumer Finances (’SCF’)” to support his argument which is both logos and ethos, and then as the article come to an end he uses emotion, ethos, to get the ready engaged in wanting to make a change for everyone. 

I believe that this article was for every American citizen. Especially the ones that are fighting for system social equality. I think Nick is wanting to persuade us all to fight just as hard for economic equality as systemic social equality. 

     The design was made by a team of artists for an Esty shop called SheltrCo, they aim to make social justice and protest items. The design features a quote by Desmond Tutu, a South African cleric best known for his opposition to apartheid and for winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. 

     The intended audience of this logo is people who care about social justice. The image’s purpose is to denounce silence and lack of protest in situations of injustice.By presenting silence as a black and white situation with no room for interpretation, the image uses pathos to force the audience to take a stance.

     The use of the fist, a symbol of rebellion, is meant to push people to speak up on injustices.  The image uses repetition with the blue tones of the fist and the writing, these colors contrast with the otherwise white background. Both text and fist are alined within the blue circle drawn around them, creating a clear and concise design.

Authors: Abigail Thernstrom and Stephan Thernstrom

Audience: Those too quick to dismiss, or have become blind to black progress. Most likely educated Americans as the article is published by a research group. 

Purpose: To shed light on often overlooked black progress.

Setting: 1998, the article was written before the recent rise of social justice movements. 

In my Infographic I am going  to agree and disagree with women being eligible for the draft. After 11 years in the Marine Corps and being an instructor at the school of infantry (basic entry level school after boot camp) I have a unique perspective and think not only women but men as well should be given the option to register with the selective service. My two biggest points are:  

-Higher risk of injury

-Success women have had in the military

While in my infographic I defend this claim, I play devil’s advocate in order to, later, harmer in my point. 

“Not only are black Americans healthier and longer lived then they were two decades ago, they’re also more educated. [...]The number of black students who earned bachelor’s degrees increased by 82%, from 108,018 to 196,300”

- Though this is a great achievement, the Hechinger report shows that black students have a disproportionate amount of debt at the end of college in comparison to white students.

- Due to a lack of scholarships, higher interest rates due to loans being private, etc. The US still had great advancements to make in the domain of affirmative action in order to provide black Americans with higher education that does not put them disproportionately in a fragile financial place. 

1. I plan to discuss how African Americans are forced to have more credit card debit than Whites.

2. Also after graduating college, on average African Americans owe more student loans than Whites.

In Give Black Households More Economic Power, the author could’ve talked more about reparations into black communities. In my infographic, I plan to delve more into what reparations are and why they are necessary. Additionally, the article lacked pathos, so I’d like to include experiences from black Americans into the infographic. 

What I plan on making my infographic address:

Reparations: What they are, why they are necessary, real life instances of reparations put into practice, and how they can help black Americans. 

The counter-argument that I plan to address in my inforgraphic is that education can shrink the racial wealth gap in America.

Refutes:

-Education has been proven to shrink the wealth gap but not enough for their to be equality.

-We shouldn't have to use control groups in order to shrink the racial wealth gap.
