#Repost @onearchives (@get_repost) ・・・ Randy Burns, a Northern Paiute gay activist and member of the Pyramid Lake Indian Tribe, founded Gay American Indians in 1975 with other American Indian LGBTQ activists, such as Barbara May Cameron. GAI was formed as a community space for queer Indigenous people to socialize, network, and build community with one another. Burns was particularly passionate about helping queer American Indian people find housing, education, and social support. He continues to support activist causes in the San Francisco area, having served on the People of Color AIDS commission and writing anthologies and editorials on queer American Indian identity, culture, and literature. . This would be devastating #Repost @onearchives with @get_repost ・・・ In today’s Supreme Court ruling in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case, wherein they ruled in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to make a gay couple’s wedding cake, we are reminded how this devastating and painful type of discrimination has always impacted queer communities. . In this image, a gay couple in 1957 celebrated their wedding, but never got to cherish the photos from that day. The printshop in Philadelphia deemed their photos too inappropriate to develop. #Repost @onearchives (@get_repost) ・・・ On October 12, 1998, Matthew Shepard, an openly gay university student, passed away from being tied to a barbed wire fence in rural Wyoming, brutally beaten by two assailants, and left to die. The cruel conditions of Matthew’s death, coupled with the equally horrendous murder of James Byrd, Jr., became a catalyst for the reintroduction of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act (HCPA), which would expand federal hate-crime protections to include those subjected to a criminal act on the basis of their perceived gender, sexual orientation, or disability. The HCPA was reintroduced as the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act in 1999, and after years of congressional side-stepping, the act was signed into law in 2009, becoming the first federal law to specifically provide protection to transgender people.
