Part of shooting today was an interview I did with our CEO & COO regarding how COVID-19 has affected Garver’s business. I love taking a highly involved role to tell stories everywhere in my life, including in my work. I started recording and disseminating a daily companywide audio announcement back in April and I’ve written and recorded myself reading the day’s news--as it pertains to Garver--every workday since. It’s like having my own little two-minute Garver radio show, and I’m good at it. Conducting an on-camera interview with our leadership today felt like an extension of that same voice I’ve been cultivating for the last five months. I’m also excited to anchor our annual meeting this year. I’m not doing the job I signed up for seven years ago, but I’m thankful that I’ve been able to sculpt my role into something that satisfies me.

Nailing your audition is easier when you know exactly how you look on cameras. You might think you look differently and yet on the monitor the viewers see something different, a camera has the ability to magnify physical movement thus if you are swinging your arm lightly it might appear as if you are waving and swaying like a drunkard. Bobbing heads and arching eyebrows might look good fleetingly, but if you do so continuously, you might also appear odd.

Thus, test what you look like to others. Your lines is just as important in a camera auditions as you must be confident and prepared and ready when the camera starts rolling. Not acting when the camera starts rolling might sound silly but yes, it is true. Do not act, instead imagine it is real and happening to you, and respond the way the scene requires. Remember that an actor do not call the shots and you cannot shout “Cut” when you want to thus before the camera starts rolling make sure you have already started you scene. You have to use that before moment that starts the action and in this way are you full of life and red hot from the second the camera takes notice of you and your actions.
