There needs to be a term that goes beyond “multishipping”. Multishipping just means that you're open to more than one ship per character. There needs to be a term for being open to nearly any ship, and especially fan content of nearly any ship, even if you don't actively support it. I’ll enjoy art or fic on its own merits regardless of the ship. While this is a subset of the multishipping mindset, which says that having one ship for a character doesn’t preclude other ships, it’s a step beyond that, blurring the lines between what a person ships and what they don’t ship, taking the emphasis off of support for particular pairings and putting it onto the content itself and how the characters are portrayed.
I suggest the term “omnishipping”. While “multi” means “many”, “omni” means “any/all”, which I feel sums up this mindset pretty well. It’s not a blind support for literally every ship, but rather support for good content without high regard for particular ships (kind of like how pansexuality isn’t literally being attracted to all people, but rather being potentially attracted to any person regardless of gender). Now, this doesn’t preclude having preferred ships or “OTP”s -- I have a few of those myself, actually -- but it DOES preclude being an “anti” because it requires a certain openmindedness for ship content even if that pairing could potentially have problems in canon.
Let me know what you think! Do you like this term? Is there another word for this you prefer? Let me know if you feel like you might start using this. I’d love to be able to use this to find other like-minded people!
