      THERE’S  AN  UNSETTLING  STILLNESS  in  the  air .  it’s  too  quiet ,  too  lifeless .  it  gives  off  the  sort  of  atmosphere  of  a  volcano  moments  before  it’s  about  to  erupt .  but  perhaps  a  volcano  can  come  in  many  forms  other  than  it’s  traditional  one .  maybe  this  place  she’s  come  to  call  home  was  a  volcano  as  well .  for    just  like  the  ashes  that  fly  aimlessly  through  the  air  surrounding  the  mountain  so  does  the  darkness  come  readily  forth  in  this  little  town .

      THOUGH  AT  THE  MOMENT  kairi  is  too  young  to  understand  what  darkness  really  is ,  having  only  been  exposed  to  it  once  several  months  ago .  she  doesn’t  remember  the  names  of  the  creatures  who’d  attacked  her  she  hardly  remembers  anything .  it  doesn’t  really  matter  now  though  —  the  creatures  before  her  now  are  not  the  same  as  she’d  seen  before .

      SHE’S  SCARED ,  MORE  SCARED  than  she  would  care  to  admit .  though  perhaps  the  evident  lapse  of  memory  &  the  confusing  buzz  of  what’s  happened  to  her  in  the  last  —  weeks ?  months ?  the  child  has  no  concept  of  time  anymore  as  her  mind  has  been  wiped  almost  completely  clean .  hardly  having  any  idea  of  who  you  are  or  where  you  are  does  little  to  help  one’s  overwhelming  terror  when  being  faced  by  dark  creatures .  oh ,  how  kairi  feels  like  crying  …  so  she  does .

      THE  FIVE  YEAR  OLD’S  CRIES  seem  to  alert  someone  nearby  as  she  hears  the  thud  of  hurried  footsteps  behind  her .  she  hears  a  voice  that  has  the  familiarity  of  someone  she’s  met  long  ago  &  has  nearly  forgotten  or  someone  she’s  merely  met  in  a  dream .  neither  of  these  are  true  however  but  she  remembering  so  little  of  her  life  before  she’d  been  freed  from  that  dark  chamber  some  time  ago .  

      “    KAIRI ?  —    ”  the  voice  says  &  she  can  sense  a  tone  of  disbelief  &  concern  in  the  person’s  voice .  she  turns  to  see  an  older  blond  boy  looking  down  at  her .  her  brows  furrow  as  she  tries  to  comprehend  what’s  happening .  does  she  know  this  boy ?  he  knows  her  name ?  or  at  least  she  thinks  it’s  her  name .  it’s  one  of  the  very  few  memories  that  rings  through  in  the  waves  of  fuzziness  &  uncertainty .

      SHE  OPENS  HER  MOUTH  to  ask  who  he  is  when  a  great  rumble  like  that  of  thunder  rings  through  the  place .  kairi  who’s  currently  in  a  very  fragile  emotional  state  can’t  help  but  feel  her  fear  escalate  as  she  jolts  before  rushing  to  the  boy’s  side  &  clinging  to  his  pant  leg .  she  may  not  know  who  he  is  or  —  anything  that’s  happening  but  perhaps  sometimes  you  have  to  put  blind  faith  in  the  first  person  you  see  &  hope  everything  will  turn  out  okay .  despite  the  large  sword  on  his  back  he  doesn’t  look  like  he’d  harm  her .

      THE  BOY  FROWNS ,  a  sort  of  thoughtful  yet  stoic  look  of  worry  upon  his  features .  he  lowers  a  hand  to  rest  atop  her  head ,  an  act  of  comfort ?  affection ?  protection ?  perhaps  all  three .  it’s  not  much  but  the  gesture  calms  kairi  to  an  extent .  she  feels  safe  —  at  least  for  a  little  while .  the  boy  speaks  again .  “    it’s  gonna  be  okay ,  kairi .    ”  he  says ,  patting  her  head  with  a  surprising  amount  of  gentility ,  “    nothin’s  gonna  hurt  you  —  not  while  i’m  here .    ”

      KAIRI  SNIFFS ,  HER  GRIP  ON  HIM  tightening  as  she  gives  him  a  sort  of  frantic  nod .  she  doesn’t  know  him ,  doesn’t  remember  him  to  be  more  specific  but  she  trusts  him .  so  she’ll  follow  him ,  let  him  guide  her  to  wherever  he  plans  on  taking  her .  it’s  a  dangerous  game  putting  all  your  faith  into  a  stranger  especially  when  strangers  these  days  have  done  her  nothing  but  harm .  but  what  does  kairi  have  anymore  if  she  doesn’t  have  faith ?  friends ?  family ?  —  she  doesn’t  even  know  for  sure  anymore .  

      THE  BOY  LIFTS  HIS  HAND  from  her  head  before  gently  pulling  her  hand  from  his  leg  in  order  to  take  it  in  his .  there’s  a  sort  of  familiarity  in  this  she  doesn’t  understand  &  won’t  understand  for  several  years  down  the  line .  she  asks  her  to  follow  him  &  she  does  so  without  even  a  moment  of  hesitation .  the  plan  was  to  take  her  to  a  ship  where  the  others  were  stationed ;  aerith ,  leon ,  &  yuffie  as  well  as  others .  these  names  mean  nothing  to  kairi  at  this  point  but  there  still  she  feels  the  tug  of  her  mind  urging  her  to  remember  what  she’s  forgotten .

      THEY  MAKE  IT  ABOUT  HALFWAY  when  they  appear ,  a  great  swarm  of  creatures  made  out  of  complete  darkness .  she’s  never  seen  so  many  of  them  before .  they  come  toward  them  like  the  flood  of  a  dark  sea ,  relentless  &  unyielding .  kairi  cries  out  as  her  grip  on  the  boy  tightens  out  of  fear  of  being  separated .  

      THIS  IS  ALL  IN  VAIN  or  so  it  seems  because  he  himself  separates  their  clasped  hands ,  unsheathing  his  great  sword  before  turning  to  face  her .  she  can’t  quite  read  his  expression  but  despite  the  stillness  in  his  features  kairi  can  sense  the  fear  in  his  eyes .  “    kairi ,  stay  here .  i’m  gonna  take  care  of  this ,  okay ?    ”  with  that  he  hurdles  into  the  impending  darkness ,  furiously  trying  to  fend  off  the  creatures  until  he’s  swallowed  completely  in  darkness .

   the  days  of  being  careless,  summertimes  she  never  spent  with  him,  a  missing  key  on  her  piano,  townsfolk  working  under  the  morning’s  fist,  𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘢  𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴  𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨  𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩  𝘢𝘴  𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺  𝘧𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴  𝘢𝘴  𝘴𝘩𝘦  𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴  𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴.  there’s  not  a  story  that  isn’t  bruised,  old  or  new,  but  each  have  a  space  she’s  already  made  for  them  in  her  mind’s  eye.  reminiscing  is  the  only  way  she  could  hope  to  keep  them  pulsing,  wrong  or  right.  cage  or  bird.

   bottom  line  is,  they  were  both  right.
