Blood stained his hands once again. Not just anyone’s blood, but that of the man who had been kind enough to take him in.
“You’ve returned my beloved wife to me, Omarus. What is mine, is now yours.”
The first time he heard those words, Arafel’s voice sounded like wine, heady and romantic in a way he had not heard before. His life had been a struggle, from the start in Garlemald to having fled there and trying to hide among the Eorzeans. Omarus was not pureblooded Garlean, his mother having come from one of the conquered territories. Hatred blossomed in his heart early, the treatment of his peers having been most unkind despite his father’s name.
The words rang in his ears loud enough to force Omarus to cover them with his palms. The gesture didn’t help, nor did the low growl rising in his throat. The inn room was small compared to the grandeur of the White Hall or perhaps it was simply his guilt choking him. How could he do this to him?
The action had been easy enough. Arafel held Seviere’s attention absolute in that moment. The ties in their blood to Arafel were strong from months, years of his influence on them. As much as Seviere might threaten, Omarus knew damn well that he could never truly harm Arafel.
Yet he found himself moving unbidden. Watched his hand pick the fallen arrow off the ground. Horror rushed through him the moment his arm drew back and plunged that silver arrowhead with its wooden shaft into Arafel’s back. Between his ribs the arrowhead slid, almost too easily, until it pierced the corner of his heart. Just pierced.
The blow was perfect. Guided there by the mind of the man himself. Omarus was nothing but a pawn. The moment Arafel released his mind, he balked and ran. Never to look back even when he heard Seviere’s anguished voice say Arafel’s name. He never wanted Arafel’s blood on his hands. He never wanted this.
Arafel was never one to cut corners. This was a step in a plan.
Omarus sank onto the spartan bed and placed his head in his hands. “Why, Arafel? What is the point of another cage and scattering us to the winds?” Misery coloured his voice. Tonight, he needed tonight, and then tomorrow he’d go in search of Lo Di. The kobold had strangely been vacant for the entire scene.
