so here’s the deal y’all: milo didn’t get to camp till he was twenty-one, ie. he didn’t get to camp till after the war with gaea
he was like “roman soldiers, in my Long Island? more likely than you think!” and so he followed them and wound up in Camp Half-Blood, which was dealing with the aftermath of the battle/war
so, how did he not end up at Camp Half-Blood till his twenties? it’s not a story he likes to tell
when milo was young, his mom was his best friend. she was so important, so integral to his life, that it never really occurred to him that he had a dad that had ran out on them. none of that mattered, because when he was with his mom, he knew he was safe.
he did pretty well in school despite being rambunctious due to adhd and being dyslexic, so even though he got good grades, he was often teased for being dumb
but none of that really mattered. because despite feeling safe around his mom, he never felt safe anywhere else.
he would notice scary creatures staring at him in public, before blinking briefly and then it was gone; replaced with a normal person
he became aware of them though, when he was twelve, because he could no longer blink the monsters away. and with his mom working a lot, he never really felt safe anymore.
this was the beginning of the strain on his relationship with his mom.
he stopped going to school. just kinda left before his mom left, waited till she left, and then locked himself back into the apartment. he was safe there.
when his mom found out she drove him to school, ensuring that he got to school. that was the first day he was attacked. he doesn’t remember what, or even how he killed it he thinks he strangled it but he does know that that was the turning point.
everyday he would be attacked on the way home, unable to answer his mother’s questions of how he had gotten scratches, and bruises
when he started high school, the staff noticed and forced him to speak with a counselor. he didn’t know what to do —he was scared— so he told the truth.
he ended up being hospitalized for a month, and that was what cemented in his head that he could never ever tell anyone about what he did, or even who he was.
the nail in the coffin door was late in his freshman year when he had to burn down the gym that had filled with monsters. he wasn’t dumb, he knew that as a moc his life would be over, so he ran.
that was how he learned that he had a knack for picking locks, and that he was a really good theif
he didn’t really love it, but he had to survive.
a couple of months after running away he lucked into a celestial bronze sword, and then fighting became so much easier, and safety was something that he began to feel again.
after about a year of being on his own, being nearly 17, he found a group of young demigods, like 14 at the eldest, he began protecting them.
he became sort of a big brother for the group, and since has had a very strong paternal instinct.
around christmas he used to venture back home, and would spend christmas eve looking in at his old apartment, and would sometimes leave a gift for his mom on the windowsill. when he was 19 she wasn’t there anymore, and he hasn’t seen her since.
he’s still searching for his mom, despite the life that he has at camp half-blood and olyu, just to actually be able to hug her again
because of kind of all of this he’s very broody and often closed off, but has an instinct to protect everyone around him, and has a great deal of love and compassion for those he cares about
