Fish 'n' chips.
Pub Vieux Dublin, Montréal (Downtown). November 16, 2013.
God I love fish 'n' chips! Fried fish with fries, what's NOT to love?!
Irish pubs are another great port of comfort. Away from the hustle bustle of downtown life once lied and in many ways still lies this heartwarming gem of wood, stools, dimmed lights and whiskey.Â
We couldn't make it further down the road that day, so we swinged our plans and went for a sure bet at the Old Dublin pub on Cathcart. I used to love the old location, on the same block. That was before the newly opened luxury condo high-rise remodeled the area thus moving the Old Dublin to a new venue. The new place is not as grimy like the previous one was, with its parking lot in front, and its stench of back alley piss. It had its special charm, especially as you were going down some steps to hide away from decent society.Â
That's all gone now of course, new millennium obliges, but the pub remains, and to a certain extent it resembles all the other pubs around, which is less singular. Its location on a small off-the-beaten-track street is still charming, but you only know the bittersweet kiss of nostalgia when you've lived a little.
The food was alright, but the batter was a bit too damp for my liking. I tend to like my F'N'C a bit more crisp than soggy. But that's me. Fortunately, the taste of Harp in the afternoon tends to make you forget all that.
And that's for the best.
