As a way to participate in āOldContentOctoberā Iāll be sharing some old fics.
If that sounds fun to you, I invite you to join in :)
Please let me share my āmagnum opusā (hahaha), āPull It Togetherā AKA āThe Lorenz of Doubt.ā
This is my biggest fic project to date! It is a duology (2-fic series) for Fire Emblem: Three Houses for my favorite ship: Leonie / Lorenz. Each fic follows the same time period but with a different focal character. (So, one is Leonie POV and one is Lorenz POV.) It clocks in at about 150k between the two fics. It is, to date, the longest work (together and separately) for this ship.
Leonie Pinelli is a commoner, poor, practical, and completely lacking in romance. If her feet were any more firmly on the ground, sheād be in it. Like a potato.
Lorenz Hellman Gloucester is noble, rich, morally upright, and overly uptight. If he gets any more tightly wound, heās going to pull something.
An unexpected friendship becomes rather something more through bad haircuts, shared food, and a continent-spanning war.
OR: Leonie/Lorenz slowburn friends-to-lovers paired fics, one written from Leonie POV and the other from Lorenz POV as the two dunderheads grow up, experience Emotions, and eventually get a clue.
Leonieās POV features: Swearing! Impostor syndrome! Folk music? Handicrafts!
Each fic in the series is readable independently, and their intersecting but nonidentical journeys (and different voices) mean that each has its own flavor and appeal.
Tags: Slow burn, friends to lovers, character development, coming of age
The story starts during the Academy phase when Leonie and Lorenz are friends, then the war breaks out, and it follows them through the time skip and the war.
Each fic is readable independently (by design, and also people have read them separately and reported back that they had fun), but they are also fun as a pair. Thereās a lot of stuff in Leonieās fic that doesnāt make it into Lorenzās fic, and vice versa. I also have a friend who read it fandom blind and had fun with it! So that is wonderful too :)
It has a lot of original worldbuilding for the Leicester Alliance. It has cute moments. It has funny moments. It has plot stuff. It has lots of Golden Deer cameos.
One interesting thing (for me) is that you can see my writing get better over the course of the fic. Like, on the one hand, bummer that I wasnāt perfect throughout. On the other hand, you gotta love growth!
This is the single longest fic for this ship! Like, taken separately and taken together. And Iāve written a goodly amount of other stuff for these two as well. At one point I manually calculated by WC what percentage of leonie/lorenz fics I had written, and I was at 75%. Iām sure the number is different now, but thatās fun to think about.
Final note: I made hard copies of it, and they look pretty rad

Old-tober, week 2, B: "Normally it's not for me, but..."
Okay I know this is going to sound a little odd since I just posted about loving āfound family,ā but I have a lot of trouble reading/watching/etc many stories that include adoption as an element. Due to reasons, Iām very picky about adoption stories.Ā
⦠So I decided to write my own!Ā
āPlaceā <https://archiveofourown.org/works/45213523> is about Hilda Valentine Goneril from FE3H! It clocks in at 11K words, and itās a gen-fic :)Ā
The papers are signed, and the pink-haired foundling becomes Hilda Valentine Goneril.
Hilda is adopted, grows up, goes to school, fights a war, and goes on a roadtrip.
Basically, the premise is, āWhat if everything in FE3H was the same, except Hilda was adopted?ā Sheās still Hilda. She has the same personality. Holst is still her brother, but thereās an extra little frisson (for me) because sheās adopted. Yay!
I did so much fiddling around with this fic, yall. At one point it was like 16k. Then it was 6k. Then it shot back up to 10k. It was a 5+1. It was a fable. It was a story-within-a-story. It was overt shipping fic with Hilda/Ignatz/Leonie. It was nonlinear⦠I simply tried everything I could think of. And then finally, here we are!Ā
Other (out of order) highlights: Guest starring Ignatz and Leonie! Road trip! Ethnobotany? Cameo appearance by the worldbuilding I did for a different fic that included a lot of extra territories in the Alliance. The faceoff against the Ten Elites! Such dramaā¦
What about you? Are there any fics you wrote that include an element you normally don't gravitate to?
To be cheeky, for setting, Iām doing āI have so many feelings, none of them actionable,ā AKA the Lorenz POV fic.Ā
This one clocks in at 91k, and it is tight third person in Lorenzās perspective. Like its counterpart, itās a coming-of-age, slowburn, friends-to-lovers story. I really enjoyed getting to explore Lorenzās character as a high-strung, nobleborn, but fundamentally very morally committed person. I picked this fic for āsettingā because it gets compliments about its worldbuilding. The game doesnāt give us a lot of meat re: Fodlan in general and the Alliance in particular. It is, as the kids say, free real estate.
To start off, I added a bunch of smaller territories beyond the Big Five who are named in-game. I even made a map to help me keep track of neighbors and different alliances within the Alliance.Ā
I also really leaned into the concept of the Alliance not as a country but an actual Alliance of smaller, sovereign states. (This is reflected in the fic by the effort I made not to refer to the Alliance as a country, even though I think the game does.) This instantly made the politics within the Alliance more tricky and exciting for me.Ā
Building off the Five Great Houses, I inferred the existence of other, smaller Houses and decided that it made sense if there were more, smaller houses.Ā
From there⦠Listen. A lot of the throwaway details about how the Alliance works in this fic is just inspired by US history/politics. The Great Houses are the colonies with large populations. The smaller Houses are the colonies with smaller populations. The delicate balance of power between the Great Houses and the Lesser Houses is why the US ended up with a bicameral legislature. In the Alliance, however, the Great Houses have more votes per-house, but the Lesser Houses have more votes in total. If the Lesser Houses band together, they can outvote the Great Houses.Ā
Each House/territory has its own alliances and opponents. Specifically, Gloucester is a Great House, but they are stymied by their delightful neighbors, Acheron. In my fic, the various lesser Houses have their own āthingā that explains, at least in part, why they werenāt eaten/claimed by the nearby Great Houses. Some of the smaller territories are just more defensible or have geography that makes them not-so-desirable farmland, which makes them not-so-desirable for conquering. (This is why there are so many smaller territories near the mountain ranges.) Some of them have economic power because there are mines or other valuable resources within their boundaries. Some of them control an important port (this is Neities, aka the Foot Guyās family, for any superfans out there. His family controls the only port on the southeastern border) or an important mountain pass/trade route (Marlton and Forneau). Acheron is important because their family controls the Great Bridge of Myrddin. Other than that, theyāre surrounded by Gloucester Territory. But they control that bridge, and the other small territories stand with Acheron with reasonable consistencyānot out of loyalty to Acheron himself (he sucks) but because to allow Acheron to be threatened or even conquered would weaken the position of all the lesser Houses.
The Great Houses are influential because of their territory, but also because of their agricultural production (Riegan and Gloucester), their position as border territories (Goneril and Gloucester again), or for cultural/economic reasons (Edmund, Riegan). In the fic, Ordelia actually is a relatively small territory⦠but it was a larger territory. Ordelia lost territory after the whole Those Who Slither thing, and their territory was mostly claimed by Gloucester (I think maybe Goneril got a slice too but definitely Gloucester). This influences Lorenz and Lystiheaās interactions, and it plays into Lorenz and Lysithea being Purple. :3 Ordelia is actually a branch family of Gloucester, in the same way the Riegans relate to the Faerghan royal family. Also the Gloucesters and Fraldarius family are related, which is a shout-out to another FE3H fic.Ā
In canon, Lorenz is really invested in Gloucester and Alliance politics as a whole, so I as the author had to invest in Alliance politics. Not only does it give life to the setting, but it also gives Lorenz things to say and do. Lorenz cares so much about the Alliance, and it informs his priorities and his thoughts. It influences his relationship with Claude and shapes his arc in the fic. It also influences his relationship with Leonieānot just the noble-commoner thing, and not just the liege-citizen thing, but also because both Lorenz and Leonie talk about home a lot. We know the name of Leonieās village. I had to make up place names for the other two Golden Deer commoners. (Kierwall is called that because I thought maybe Kirsten was derived from their ancestral home. He and Leonie relate to each other in a few specific ways because they both come from commoner stock in Gloucester, whereas Ignatzās cultural context is slightly different because his family is from Riegan.) Both Lorenz and Leonie carry their land with them in their hearts; even when they travel, they know where their roots still lie.Ā
Other setting notes: more broadly, I conceptualize the Empire as the most obviously restrictive culture because theyāre the oldest country? Does that make sense? No idea. Thatās why their nobles ābend the knee.ā The Holy Kingdom of Faerghus is all about vows and dying-breath loyalty and the Goddess, so their lords go through a confirmation. The Alliance isnāt really even a single country, and theyāre a bit of a hodge podge, so their lords go through a Disputation when a new leader (spokesperson? chairman?) is chosen. (Also! I thought it was fitting that a character like Lorenz would come out of a culture where the leaders are inducted through a long-ass debate.)Ā
Within the Alliance, a territoryās proximity to the Kingdom versus Empire affects their culture. Gloucester is closest to the Empire, so their culture is on the more restrictive/conservative end within the Alliance. (Also they even share a border with the Kingdom, which is neatly appropriate given Lorenzās feelings of religious obligation and Leonieās own faith.)Ā
Anyway that was a lot of information about the setting of āI Have So Many Feelings, None of Them Actionable.ā Thank you for reading. https://archiveofourown.org/works/26247277/chapters/63887824
Happy October! Today I will be sharing fics on the theme āorigin story.āĀ
The first fic is, āAll things considered (could be worse)ā which is in the Netflix Daredevil fandom. It Foggy/Matt. It clocks in at 47.9K spread across 53 chapters :)
Foggy is a lawyer with his own practice. Matt's an ex-law student and vigilante.
Ā āHello, Iām Foggy. Whatās your name?ā Foggy asks. It is, admittedly, not necessarily the best opening line, but itās certainly not the worse.
The second fic Iām sharing today is āwith care and attentionā which is my first-ever fic I posted for FE3H (fire emblem three houses), and itās Byleth/Yuri, and itās smut. :)
Byleth was not an amazing kisserāshe didnāt take his breath away or do obscene things with her tongueābut she was competent, and she kissed Yuri exactly the way he wanted to be kissed. She filed away his likes and dislikes for this in the same way sheād learned everyoneās hobbies and favorite blends of tea.
Rambling about each below
Iām going to do the smut one because my rambling there will be shorter
āwith care and attentionāĀ is the first-ever fic I posted for FE3H, and itās smut. Iāve joked before that my debut into any fandom is always smut, but honestly thatās less of a joke and more of an accurate observation.
I have little memory of the contents of this fic, just that I was kind of nervous to be posting it, and at the time of writing this thing about it, it has... 8 comments (4 of which are my responses). Itās been up for a little more than 2 years. So I often sort of forget it exists, but that makes it extra amazing when someone finds it and says they liked it :) And it marks my entrypoint into posting for my current fandom! And the comments on it are SO nice, theyāre like āI like the sexy consent! I like the way the intimacy is portrayed.ā It makes me feel like I did something spiffy :)
==
āAll things considered (could be worse)ā is, no lie, my most viewed, most kudosāed, most bookmarked, subscribed, and commented-on fic on AO3 to date and probably ever. I feel very comfortably saying I probably āpeakedā already* (*if you measure success by those metrics, and I donāt) so I have full freedom to dick around forevermore, amen.Ā
I really, really donāt understand when fic writers are all āoh no someone found my old fic and commented that they like Iām embarrassedā because I LOVE that! Obviously, Iām participating in this event :) When I get a comment on an old fic, itās like getting a letter from a friend I havenāt seen in a long time. āOh, hello! Youāre still out there, doing your thing! Good for you! I love you!ā
I donāt know why this fic is as widely-read as it is? Iād like to think itās because Iām an amazing writer but there are a lot of amazing writers in the world.
I hope itās because itās a very cozy piece. Itās like āoh what if this part of the premise were harder, but everything else was somehow easier? what if Matt and Foggy met, and they still became friends, what if Karen Page showed up and they became a team, what if Marci and Claire were there and everyone was kind in their own way? What if people asked for help and received it?ā
So I think maybe, it is still as well-liked as it is because itās nice to think about that. And the format (mostly slice-of-life episodes kinda??) supports that.Ā
The meta-story of working on and ultimately finishing that fic is that kind of story too, because I started it, and then I didnāt have time, but kind comments kept coming in, and that gave me the motivation to finish the story--for me, for the characters, and especially for the people who read it and liked it. The fic is complete because of the random generosity of internet strangers :)
