i wonder how many people who've read The Fifth Elephant know that the Knockers and Firedamp are real things
especially in the old coal mines
knockers are specifically a Cornish thing, they have other names in other places, they called them knockers in my part of Queensland too
i dont know about the knocker men tho, they weren't a thing in the Queensland coal mines, not the ones my family worked anyway. no One specific man anyway.
it was just the bloke with the biggest cahones, who could throw a match the furthest.
