The short bursts of bright light were harsh against her eyes. Even with her head bowed, Katara felt overwhelmed in a matter of seconds after stepping foot out the door. Ahead of her, Suki and Sokka cut the path through the crowd. Behind her, Kya and Bumi trailed along.
"Just ignore 'em, Ma," Bumi insisted loudly in her ear before he cocked his head in the other direction. "Scram!"
The small party hadn't made it more than a hundred feet away from the dock before the persistent crowd made a lurch. The elder waterbender fell to her knees with a wince.
With a wave of his glider, the sea of people parted. A red faced man with shoulders cocked and determination his steps advanced forward. Katara felt the arms of her children helping her back to her feet. A warm brightly colored cloak draped over her shoulders and hooded her head.
"Vultures," Tenzin hissed, his arm tight around Katara.
She leaned into the solid frame of her younger son and gripped Kya's hand."Thank you, sweetie."
Once inside again, the cloak fell away and her guards stepped aside as Pema greeted them. "I heard the noise, are you alright?"
"Every time I visit..." Katara sighed. She smiled down at the bundle in her daughter-in-law's arms then over at Tenzin. "But I'm just fine, always am I."
