              there's  not  a  lot  of  people  that  beard  hates  more  than  james  tartt.    on  principle,   despite  how  often  he  fails,    beard  tries  to  be  more  of  a  pacifist.    a  lover,   not  a  fighter.   or  how  ted  had  posed  it  to  him  three  years  ago,    a  panda,   not  a  lion.    but  james  tartt  makes  it  really  hard  to  be  a  pacifist,    not  when  beard  can  see  the  echoes  of  his  very  existence  within  his  locker  room.    or  more  specifically,    within  jamie.    from  his  intense  egoism  when  they  first  arrived,   to  the  way  he's  flinched  whenever  somebody's  come  too  close  too  quickly,    to  watching  it  happen  firsthand  . . .      beard  hates  james  tartt.      he  can't  deny  that  this  hatred  has  seeped  into  his  protection  over  jamie,    a  boy  almost  too  mirrored  to  himself.     he  knows  what  it's  like  to  want  to  be  the  best,    to  flourish  despite  those  who  try  to  stifle  them.       he  hates  james  tartt,    because  he  hated  his  own  father.     funny  how  things  cycle,   time  and  time  again.
