Travels with a girl with a sword. Day 16 Today we went back to Arashiyama to see the Iwatoyama Monkey Sanctuary. It was amazing. All the monkeys run wild and the humans are caged. What a good idea. They are phenomenal to watch. I could have spent hours there, if not for the fact that beer time was calling, and the sun was blazing down.
After beer time we hired a boat to go down the Oi river. It was punted. The trip was stunningly beautiful, the water blue and the trees a magnificent abundance of green, so prolific in Japan.
Nat ( girl with sword) wanted to eat at a special temple bar in the evening so we made a long trek back by rail and foot. I had imagined the Kanga-an temple to be a little cavern, but no. It turned out to be the smartest of restaurants and, as we had made no reservation, we could only have a drink of sake in the smart bar, costing £12! Nevermind….again the atmosphere was stunning and gardens glorious. No complaints!
