I beat The October Horror Movie Challenge! I had twenty two first time viewings on the list and a total of forty three movies in thirty one days... which means I just barely beat my record of forty one for last year!
I included episodes of TV on the list but didn't count them toward the overall score. It’s been a ton of fun doing this and I’ll be doing it again for the third year running next time, I’m sure.

Today, on the final stretch of my October Horror Movie Challenge, I watched two movies which completely surprised me. I had heard good buzz about them both but I wasn’t expecting nearly as much from them.
I watched We Are Still Here and The Loved Ones.
We Are Still Here appears simple enough, a couple lose their son and move to a nice, big house which they got for cheap. It’s cheap because people died there, nobody has lived in this place for thirty years. It’s got some traditional thrills, some very effective haunted house moments and a really killer ending. I won’t say much more but it’s deceivingly simple and I thought it was great.
I thought The Loved Ones was a better movie, but it’s not fair to compare them considering the genres are totally different. The Loved Ones is about a teenager named Brent going to the school dance with his girlfriend Holly. The only problem is that he doesn’t quite make it to the dance because Lola, a jealous girl with an obsessive father, makes sure that he spends the time with her instead. There are kitchen knives, rope and drills involved. It gets messy and it is awesome.
I can see myself watching We Are Still Here again in the near future but The Loved Ones is going to be a new favourite. I absolutely adored it, the blend of humour mixed with the intense situations is coupled expertly. The characters and the simple but effective story are perfect and it had some fantastic shots in it, too. I flinched at a few moments, and I rarely flinch at horror movies!
I highly recommend them both to any horror fan, but only if you’re not too squeamish!
OHMC 2016: Howl (2015)
I just finished watching Howl, another first time viewing, and I was quite surprised! It's a solid little werewolf movie with an interesting setting and premise. The last train out of London breaks down in the middle of the forest a few miles from the final stop leaving the passengers stranded on a full moon and surrounded by hungry werewolves.
I'll be the first to admit that the creature design makes or breaks any werewolf movie, and I still haven't seen a werewolf design I've liked more than the ones in Dog Soldiers, but these wolves are interesting to say the least. Less hairy, pretty muscular yet lean and with barely prominent snouts, their overall design does not immediately scream 'werewolf' when you look at them but their behaviour is spot on and their movements are rather creepy. It's certainly a unique take!
The movie is a lot of fun with good gore and practical effects, although the werewolves do look a bit 'man in a rubber suit' at times, however, those times are rare and it doesn't detract from the fun. It's definitely one of the better wolf movies in my opinion, better than Late Phases anyway!
Oh, and this train is the least diverse train from London you will ever see. I've never seen so little diversity on a train coming from London before, 95% of these people are white! It's the least believable thing in the whole movie!
For my Horror Movie Challenge tonight I'm watching Howl, which is about people stuck on the last train out of London surrounded by werewolves after the train breaks down in a forested area, and so far the least believable part is the lack of diversity on the train.
OHMC 2016 - Martyrs (2008)
Okay so I realise I haven’t written reviews for anything I’ve watched yet but today I watched Ju-on: The Grudge (liked it!), Ringu (loved it!) and some of Martyrs (hated it!).
I managed to get an hour into Martyrs with forty minutes left before the unbearable unpleasantness of the movie beat me. If you like watching women be tied to chairs, beaten, cut and abused with graphic attention to detail then this movie might appeal to you. It doesn’t appeal to me, I went in blind and if I knew it was a damn torture porn movie I would never have added it to the list. For some reason I hear people sing its praises and now I wonder why. I'm fine with horror and good with gore but torture porn is pointless and generally gross, I don't like to waste my time with it and I'm definitely never revisiting this movie.
From reading the Wikipedia summary I didn't miss anything else apart from watching the lead character be, you guessed it, tortured for the remaining forty minutes. I don't remember any other movie recently which I've switched off over half way through, this one's something else.

OHMC 2016 Update!
I had my friend over who I’ve introduced to the world of Evil Dead, Freddy and Jason so I didn’t get around to watching [REC] 3 and Apocalypse tonight but we did finish off the Friday the 13th series by watching Jason X! We watched the Ash vs Evil Dead season 2 episode ‘Home’, too. Ash vs Evil Dead is on top form and the practical effects are so, so good. The dodgy CGI blood is nowhere in sight in this first episode, and if it is there I didn’t notice it. Top quality TV.
As for Jason X, it is still a horrendous trainwreck upon this second viewing but we were in absolute tears at the sleeping bag kills and the guy surfing Uber Jason to Earth 2. The liquid nitrogen kill has secured its place as one of the top kills in the entire franchise, too.
I’m bumping the [REC] movies to tomorrow and Southbound to Thursday with The Witch so hopefully I can catch up!
