7. a love poem. 

      Concealed in his wallet and written on a gum wrapper was a poem. There was no telling how old it was, or young. The paper still smelled of mint, but the letters of ink were fading. It was obvious that it was from Fox, though her signature was nowhere upon it. On the shiny surface of the back was a doodle of a fox, lest Vidic forget who it was that loved him.

[ sms: vidic. 9:04 pm. ] unsent. it’s really hard to focus when i’ve got you on my mind. maybe hanging out wasn’t a good idea. 

[ sms: vidic. 2:31 pm. ] unsent. i know this is sort of out of the blue, and we haven’t talked for a week or so, but i got these free tickets to a movie festival and i was wondering if maybe you wanted to go with me? not like a date or anything haha... unless you wanted it to be a date, because i wouldn’t say not to a date with you. and now i’ve made it awkward, way to go, fox.

[ sms: vidic. 3:00 am. ] unsent. so maybe i’ve been drinkgin a litle and maybe i kind a likes you more than i let on, but yeah, i want yoto sleep at my bed sometime. 

[ sms: vidic. 6:45 pm. ] unsent. vidic, i’m really sorry, i hate to do this on such short notice, but i’m not going to make it to the thing tonight. i can’t expect you to understand what it’s like to be there with you while you get hit on and flirt with other people while i have to stand there being your friend, pretending i’m not head over heels in love with you. god that’s pathetic isn’t it. anyway, yeah, i’m not going to show up and also i don’t want to be friends with you anymore. 

[ sms: vidic. 8:27 am. ] unsent. remember that date i went on last night? well, i couldn’t quite put my finger on why i didn’t like this guy, i mean he had everything going for him, but this morning, when i woke up, i realized why that was. he wasn’t you. i don’t want to see anyone else, i just want to see you. 

      Doll face?! The expression Fox wore could only be described as d r y. Out of every hired gun in the entirety of the commonwealth, how was it she got stuck with the rudest, least charming, unhumorous one? Caps could buy a lot of things, but they would never be able to buy back the days wasted listening to his sarcasm and sass.

      “Don’t be daft. I was talking about you and your complete lack of any sort of decency. I swear, I’ve seen better acting dogs than you.” His offer of a cigarette was refused with the simple cross of her arms -- there was nothing she was very keen on sharing with him, including the cigarettes that came from his pack. “I’m not one of those blasted raiders, but I swear, I want to shoot you too.” Vidic was fixed with a critical gaze, he was quickly shattering every assumption she had of him and deepening others. Bull-headed, handsome in a roguish sort of way, good with a gun, protective, and cap-hungry. Vidic King in a nutshell as Fox saw it. 

      “Don’t call me doll face again, you might think I’m some weak, city girl in need of constant attention and protection, but I’ll kick your ass if you keep it up, Mr. King.” It wasn’t a threat, it was a p r o m i s e.

      “We made a lot of promises that weren’t kept.” If avoiding eye contact was a sport, she’d be world champion by now. “It’s not as if I meant to break this one, do you really think I’d try to hurt you, Vidic? Do you think so poorly of me to assume that?” His words stung fiercely, she had meant it, she still did, but times had changed and they couldn’t. They just couldn’t. Fox had commitments she had to keep, for the good of the family, for the good of their legacy, and as much as it pained her, she again had to put others first. It was sheer misfortune and bad luck that Vidic wasn’t the one put first this time, otherwise they would’ve been wonderfully well off still.
