Alix gasped as she jerked awake, that feeling of breaking through the surface after a wave had knocked you under nearly overwhelming her. She blinked as she looked around, trying to catch her breath and orient herself.
That asshole last night mustâve hit her harder than she thought. Such a weird dreamâŠ
âOh, good. Youâre up.â
She jumped at the voice, and her eyes blew wide when she saw Luka walking towards her in nothing but a towel. When he reached the bed, he cupped the back of her head and bent to give her a kiss. She was so shocked she didnât bother pulling away.
âI was afraid Iâd have to go before you woke up,â he said. He winked at her before moving towards the dresser. âThought Iâd have to get the bucket.â
âBucket?â she parroted, numb. Her eyes widened as he shucked the towel and pulled on his boxers and jeans.
Damn, CouffaineâŠ
âDonât worry â youâre not a Couffaine,â he said, voice teasing. He looked over his shoulder, pausing as he started putting his bracelets on. ââŠyet. Ice bucket alarm clocks are reserved for family, according to Jules. She might make an exception for you, though.â
âWhatâŠwhat the fuck are you talking about?â she groaned, rubbing at her eyes. He turned back to her, pausing with a shirt in his hands. âWhy the fuck are you in my room? Why the fuck were you naked? Jesus Christ, Couffaine.â
ââŠbecause I spent the night?â he asked, sounding bewildered. âBecause I have to get to work and donât have time to head back to my place to shower? You feeling ok, Alix?â
âReally not,â she grumbled, pausing as something else occurred to her. ââŠyou kissed me. The fuck, Luka? The fuck?! Why the fuck are you kissing me?! Oh my God, Marinetteâs going to freakâ I donât cheat on my friends with their husbands, Luka! What the fu-â
âThatâs not funny,â Luka said, his voice suddenly deadly serious. She looked back at him to find he was glaring at her. His knuckles were white from how tightly he was holding the shirt. âThatâs notâŠwhat the fuck, Alix?â
âDamn right itâs not funny, itâs ââ she started, but he shoved his shirt on and waved a hand at her, signaling for her to stop. He walked over to the door, but he paused with his hand on the knob. His gaze was focused on one his bracelets â one made of knotted rope, interwoven cords of blue and pink. His hand tightened on the knob.
âI might be late tonight,â he said, voice flat. âHopefully youâll be less crazy then.â
He yanked the door open and walked out, slamming it behind him. A few minutes later, she heard the muffled sound of another door slamming. She dropped her head in her hands, groaning.
What. The. Fuck?

About half an hour later, Alix was shuffling through her living room with a bowl of Trix. Everything lookedâŠweird. Sheâd always been a bit of a minimalist, but the room seemed even more so now. The pictures were weird, too. So many from when they were younger, but where were the recent ones? The one of Team Miraculous, taken the day Hawkmoth had fallen? The ones from their yearly memorial lunch? The one she had just framed from Marinetteâs baby shower?
And why the hell were there so many of Luka with her?
An unexpected knock on her door almost had her dropping her bowl of cereal. She was surprised to open the door and find Juleka, her hair cut short enough to be brushing her chin, glaring at her from the hall.
âLu called,â she said, tightening her grip on her purse. âSaid you were asking aboutâŠsaid it was a Bad Day.â
âYeah,â Alix scoffed, stepping aside to let her in. âIf by Bad Day you mean I woke up to your brother naked in my room.â
ââŠew,â Juleka said, scrunching her nose. âI know youâre boning my brother, but I donât need to know the details, Al.â
âNot you, too!â Alix groaned, dropping her bowl on the counter. Juleka raised an eyebrow at her. âIâm notâŠughâŠboning your brother. So far from interested, Juleka. Thatâs Marinetteâs job, not â ok what?â
Juleka was looking at her like sheâd just slapped her. Like it really was a Bad Day, whatever the hell that meant. She sighed and put her purse on the counter, her fingers digging into the fabric.
âI was expecting this, I guess,â she sighed, sitting on one of the stools and dropping her head in her hands. âI was just expecting the call to come from you because heâd decided to spend her birthday in a bar again.â
ââŠwhat?â Alix asked. Juleka looked up, glaring at her.
âI know you two have thisâŠthing between you,â she said. âTime Twins or whatever the hell you want to call it. And most days Iâm grateful for it. I donât think anyone else couldâve put him back together afterâŠand he was probably the only one who understood how fruitless all your burrowing was. You guys saved each other afterâŠbut hell, Alix. Maybe itâs time you both realize the savingâs done and you need to move on. What you have isnât healthy. Not if youâre going to keep hurting each other like this.â
âLike what?â Alix asked, throwing her hands up. âI donât even know what I did, what ââ
âYou told him he was married to Marinette!â Juleka snapped. âWhen you know damn well sheâs been dead for four years and the only thing that keeps him going most days is holding it together for you!â
Alix stood there, shocked, as Juleka seemed to lose her fight. She looked down at her wrist, panting, and picked at a bracelet Alix hadnât noticed before. It looked just like Lukaâs, except it was red and black instead of pink and blue. She had noticed a similar one on her own dresser, but she hadnât bothered putting it on.
ââŠhe loves you, Alix,â she finally said, closing her eyes and taking a breath, âbut heâs always gonna love her more. And every time you wake up on a Bad Day and mix up the timelines, itâs always gonna kill him a little bit more. He wonât leave you because he thinks Iâm being stupid. But damn it, Alix. I need you to leave him before you kill him.â
She looked up, her eyes watery.
âIâve already lost Rose. Weâve all already lost Marinette,â she said. âI canât lose my brother, too.â
Alix opened her mouth to answer, but her head was swimming. She had no idea what to say. SheâŠ
âJulekaâŠâ she started, swaying on her feet. The last thing she was aware of before she hit the ground was Juleka screaming her name.
