There was an explosion. There was fire.
Gabriel Reyes slowly opened his eyes, barely conscious, his body floating in a bacta tank. Through the blue liquid he saw a familiar figure. Hands waving, shouting. Angela took a glance towards the tank.
"Ah, Gabriel, you are awake"
She turned her attention towards a small, disfigured man.
"Igor! Bring mir den Notizen!"
The man ran off into the other room, mumbling something underneath his nose.
"So, Gabriel, welcome to my home away from home!"
Lightning crackled in the distance, the stone walls amplifying the noise. Angela giggled to herself.
"Can you imagine how cheap I got this castle? It's insane! I feel just like Viktor Frankenstein. I even found myself a servant. I named him Igor. He isn't very fond of it, but what can he do?"
The doctor turned towards one of the halls and yelled something in German. Igor answered her and walked into the room again, holding a folder overflowing with papers. He gave it to Angela and she gestured him to scurry off.
"Now, that was quite the stunt you pulled. Did you know that you caught on chemical fire and a building fell on you? Igor barely managed to pull you out. It's a miracle you are even alive. In any case, my Hippocratic Oath forces me to help you in your current situation. You have two options"
She opened up her folder skimming through her notes
"The first one is for me to nurse you back to full health," she droneed out with a bored expression, hand gesturing how mundane this possibility is "oooooorrr...." her face slowly broke into a smile "I can give you fog powers and you can suck the life out of other people."
She found the papers she was looking for and placeed it on the tank
"I know it's a tough decision, here is the contract you have to sign, just your standard stuff, do nothing and stare blankly if you want the fog powers"
Gabriel did nothing and stared blankly. Of course, he didn't hear any of that, because his eardrums were ruptured and had almost completely lost his sight.
"Right! Fogman it is! Igor! Wisch den Tisch ab! Heute machen wir Magie!"
Fluids entered the bacta tank and Gabriel lost consciousness.
Gabriel opened his eyes again, woken by the sound of German shouting. He saw, this time properly, Doctor Angela Ziegler. Her angered expression turned to one of concern when she noticed her patient was awake.
"Ah, Garbriel. You are awake. We seem to have run into a...was war's...a bit of a hiccup."
She took her notes and looked through them.
"It seems that Igor didn't do his job properly when he was cleaning the table and some breadcrumbs were left on it. You won't notice it now, since you are doped up on morphine, but you will experience discomfort in your day to day life. It includes, but is not limited to headaches, stomachaches, bone pain, muscle cramps, throat problems, a teenage mentality, memory loss, backpain, pain while urinating, pain while defecating, athlete's foot, tooth decay, et cetera, et cetera..."
She turned to another page.
"Also, there is the problem with your payment. Turns out, this is the funniest thing really, that when you blew up the Overwatch headquarters, the government disbanded the organization. So...this operation was not covered by your medical insurance. I don't know how much your military pension is, but since you turned traitor and are now considered a home terrorist...you see where I am going with this, right?"
The heart-rate monitor started beeping faster.
"Bottom line, you are in debt. Forever."
The heart-rate monitor beeped even faster. It stopped.
"Scheiße! Igor! Defibrillator!"
"And that's it. That's my reason for seeking revenge."
Amelie took her cup from the coffee machine. It always seemed strange how Talon couldn't afford utensils in the cafeteria but still had a coffee machine. You did have to pay for the coffee, so maybe that's where they get most of their funding.
"So...what you are saying is, you want to kill the remaining Overwatch agents...because the government wouldn't pay for your operation?"
"Yes and that the operation was done in subpar conditions."
"Yes, but shouldn't the procedure be free? It doesn't seem like Mercy did the most moral thing and she can't possibly expect the government to pay for it."
"How did you hear anything?" she cut him off.
Amelie drank from her coffee.
"You were in a tank, filled with bacta. And a building fell on you. How could you hear any of the things the woman said to you?"
Gabriel scratched the back of his head.
"Well...Mercy did say that I could have memory problems..."
"So there is a chance that nothing in that story happened?"
"And you can't be sure if that is why you seek revenge?"
Gabriel scratched his chin. It did made sense. Although he did remember everything so vividly. Ana, Igor, the castle, Jack doing backflips in the back...or was it Reinhart? Memory was getting kind of fuzzy these days. What was he talking about again?
